Completelty random CPU lag spikes

Hi Guys,

I know there are similar posts to this but I'm hoping someone could help me.

I have a custom built computer, which I purchased roughly a year ago (Happy to provide specs or msconfig). It has been running great, up until a couple of months ago. It can still run current games on max graphics with no problem however on completely random days the CPU spikes and keeps spiking every 2-3 minutes. The CPU usage spikes will last approx 5-10 seconds and performance will return to normal.

The thing that has me confused is that one day it will do it and another day it won't (I actually had a week where it didn't do it all). I initially supsected it was a background program updating itself, but I have been unable to find the culprit.


I have Advanced System Care Pro on my computer and I'm constantly running scans and cleans and according to that everything is fine. I then thought maybe it was a hardware issue but that doesn't seem to be it either.

The times that I notice it is when I'm playing high end games, however the CPU usage monitor for Advanced System Care indicates that it does it when it is idle as well.

I'm pretty sure I'm correct about a background process/program doing it but I am at a loss. I really really don't want to have to take it a shop to get it fixed and have them hand it back to me and say nothing is wrong lol

Any ideas?

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

If you search these forums for Advanced SystemCare Pro, you will find many problems caused by that software. Windows 7 does not need any help from such a tool. Try and get your money back.

If you just really want to keep that software, then please uninstall it while we look for the cause of the CPU spikes.

Download Process Explorer from here:
Process Explorer

There is nothing to install:
Download the zipped (compressed) file
Open the zipped (compressed) file (folder)
Copy the files somewhere
Run the exe as admin
Agree to the EULA

Change the time that apps stay highlighted in the Process Explorer window to 9 seconds:
Options > Difference Highlight Duration

You can start Process monitor and leave it running - or wait until you experience the high CPU usage to open Process Explorer. Watch the lines that are highlighted in green (starting app) and in red (ending app). You can press the space bar (while Process Monitor is in focus) to pause/freeze the updates - then right-click on the row of interest to see various options from the context menu.

Thanks for the response.

I have uninstalled Advanced Sysytem Care, but the computer is still experiencing random CPU lag spikes. I will install Process explorer and see what results I obtain.
