Computer can't come out of hibernation. Status: 0xc000009a

Hi guys,

So I've posted a thread on the Lenovo forum regarding this problem but haven't gotten a solution yet so a friendly guy advised me to make a thread here, so here it goes:

Ever since I've had this laptop (Lenovo P50, bought last November) I've been experiencing issues with hibernation mode. When trying to make the computer come out of hibernation mode it gives me a black screen with an error message saying "Computer can't come out of hibernation. Status: 0xc000009a", as shown in attachment. After this step it tries to reboot and then it gives me the option of rebooting with losing my data or trying again to recover the stuff I was doing. When I try to recover it ends up on the same error so I need to restart and lose my data. It doesn't happen always but it has happened enough to make me not use hibernation mode, I always put it to sleep.

There's two other twerks that happen with my laptop as well. When I have that error and reboot it has happened a few times that the programs I pinned on my taskbar are gone. So the taskbar is empty. This doesn't very often but still frustrating.
The second one is when I get the computer out of sleep mode it shows the brightness level bar and it stays there until I press the button to change the brightness of volume. Then it disappears.

I did the Memtest86+ and got no errors after 3 passes which took 6 hours.

Any genius out there that has a clue of what could be wrong here and if I can fix it somehow? Thanks.

Welcome to the 7forums

Since Memtest86+ only made 3 passes and the minimum requirement is 8, I may need to ask you to run it again if deemed necessary.

It seems there are some logs missing.
Run this command in an admin command prompt, it'll create some files on the desktop. Select the files, copy them to a zip file and upload the zip.

Thanks Martijn, Siemen really needed some extra help to tackle this one. My P50 I have not had a hibernation issue yet so hopefully this can be resolved.

Yeah I realized that but unfortunately because of my work it's hard to find a moment where I would not need my computer for longer than 8-10 hours. Question. If I let the Memtest run for 4 days, can it cause any harm? Because I'm going on holidays for a few days from next weekend. Perhaps I could do it then.

MemTest86+ cannot cause any harm to your system, no matter how long you run it.

What are your current pagefile settings?

Alright, then I'll test the hell out of this thing during those 4 days.

Did you run a chkdsk on the Windows partition?
If not, run following command in an admin command prompt

chkdsk /r

It will ask if you want to schedule this task on reboot, because it can't run whilst the partition is mounted, press Y and reboot.

Alright, I just did the chkdsk /r. Did this create any file or anything from doing this that I should upload?

Looks good, let's see if this made a difference.

CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
master file table (MFT) bitmap.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

Interesting! So this could have fixed it? (whatever it did?) I'll run the Memtest from tomorrow morning up to Tuesday evening. Then I can do some crash testing on hibernation.

There is a good chance it could have yes.
Problems related to hardware can cause a variety of issues.

Hi guys, I just got back and the Memtest did 33 passes in 84 hours with no errors.
I haven't gotten around testing if the hibernation issue pops up again since that last trick you recommended me to do, axe0. But I'll do some testing over the coming few days and see if it's resolved.View attachment 400479

Unfortunately. It just happened again. . The battery ran out of power and the computer went into hibernation mode and I got the same issue...
Is there anything else I can do?

When a hard reset, for any reason, happens, the first things you'll want to do is make sure there is no corruption in Windows.
Please run following commands (again) in an admin command prompt.

chkdsk /r
sfc /scannow

I would also recommend to run SURT (System Update Readiness Tool)

Hi rvcjew,
Well... I tried running Surt. But when I downloaded and it started installing there was not much that seemed to happen. It got stuck at "initializing setup" and after a few hours I clicked it away and tried it again. And from then on I just get the same error every time I try... Annoyed by coming across another error I got a bit discouraged and never tried fixing this error...

Anyway, I accidentally ran out of power again today and it (can't come out of hibernation) happened again.
