Hello,

I recently started getting intermittent freezes at the welcome screen or desktop (No new programs had been installed for weeks). At first, they happened every few reboots, and progressed to the point of happening after each reboot.

A few days ago I decided to perform a clean install in an attempt to track down the issue. After the installation completed, I installed the motherboard drivers and let Windows begin the automatic updating process. The computer worked fine until this morning, when I encountered my first freeze. Aside from the windows installation, here are the programs I have installed:

Mozilla
Google Chrome
Steam
Deathadder (drivers)
Nvidia Experience (drivers)
Filezilla
CCleaner
Origin (for BF3)
Core Temp (Monitor CPU Temp)
Itunes
TeamSpeak 3
Microsoft Office 2010
MSI Afterburner (Monitor GPU Temp)

The only programs installed today were MSI, Nvidia Experience and Itunes.

My computer loads safe mode w/networking each attempt. It also loads Windows when I perform a selective start using no services or start items, and when only Microsoft services are de-selected.

I use CCleaner for the purposes of clearing temp. files and do not utilize the registry cleaning portion.

Should I assume a Microsoft service is the culprit?

How should I go about troubleshooting this issue?

Thanks,
Daniel

I have uninstalled Gigabytes on/off charge and disabled IPV6 in the registry. The computer booted twice consecutively and did not hang at the desktop.

I have attached a new version of the SF Diagnostic tool for verification. Would you mind double checking the logs to make sure everything appears in order?

Thanks,
Daniel

My computer has performed well until a few minutes ago (rebooted computer for the evening and encountered two freezes at welcome screen back to back). To my knowledge, the only modifications made to my computer have been the addition of iCloud and importing pictures/music.

Update: I left my computer running safe mode for about a day. Upon rebooting the computer did not freeze at the desktop (this was yesterday). Tonight I rebooted the computer only to find the same freezing issues at the welcome screen/desktop.

Here are the logs from my computer:

No BSOD.

Those random freezes may be caused either by software, or by hardware. At first try to eliminate the chance that the freezes are being caused by Software by free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept then restart.
Is it still behaving the same? Let us know.

I have disabled all startup programs (except the Anti Virus). It took three reboots to reach a working desktop (the first attempt froze at the welcome screen and the second froze at the desktop after about 30 seconds).

To elaborate on the freezes:

My computer will show hard drive activity (blue light is blinking on the tower) and you can hear disc searching.

When the freeze occurs at the welcome screen, the cursor loading icon (small circle) stops spinning and the hard drive light stops showing activity (in addition to the hard drive no longer audibly searching/loading).

When my computer freezes at the desktop, usually it will load for about 15 seconds and then freeze right after refreshing the desktop icons (mouse freezes at center of screen), hard drive stops loading and the light shows no activity.

I left the computer at both states for over an hour only to show no progress. Now I just force the computer to shut down when it hangs.

I tested the memory last month when these problems started (no errors with any of the sticks in slot 1 at 7+hrs of memtest 86)

The hard drive is Western Digital (just ran their in house hard drive testing program and came up with no hard drive errors)

What should I try next?

Thank you again for the assistance in tracking down this issue.

Make it sure that the PSU is working properly. If it is failing to supply adequate power, all those may happen.

Also dismantle the PC. Clean the inside. Clean all the fan grills, air vents so that it can blow the hot air out effectively. Demove/re-seat all the ports ... SATA, power, RAM, GPU. Clean the edges of SATA and power cables and RAMs.

  • Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
Test your RAM modules for possible errors.

Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

I am not sure how to test the PSU for proper functionality. Do you mean by using some type of volt meter?

The PC is clean, side door is open, all wires/connections/terminals are clean and properly secured, and all fans (5x 120mm Antec Tricool) are on the hi setting.

Seatool ended with a "pass" rating (see below)

The Furmark program ran for about 1hr and 15min (burn in mode) when I ended it (see below)

Just to cover my bases, I have replaced the HD Sata Cable.

The ram was tested with Memtest86+ overnight for at least 10 passes per stick, with no errors at the time (late last month when the freezes started occuring)

TDSS killer found nothing suspicious. Windows Defender was unable to locate anything during the quick or full system scan.

My bios shows the following voltages:
Vcore ~ 1.484V
DDR3 1.5v ~ 1.484V
+3.3V ~ 3.344V
+12V ~ 12.112V

I did not see a 5V rail in the bios
