Hello, recently i ordered a new Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB off of Amazon and I think its causing my computer to freeze and lag. It sometimes freezes for about 5 seconds ( can't move mouse ), and sometimes it freezes so long I have to restart. And also, when the screen blacks out after 3 minutes, i came back to see it wasn't responding and it automatically restart. I've ran Anti-Virus, no problems. I also defraged the disk, didn't help. I looked at the event viewer logs and this is what it says. I dont know if this will help.

Go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and search for # 2645594, which deals with Windows 7 and AMD FX chips. I will install it on mine tonight and will post back with the results. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the info and good luck.

Not sure why - the patch should be applicable with any FX chip. Yours is the Zambezi core and mine is the Vishera core, but the patch applies to all of the FX series, not just certain ones. Go back and read the installation instructions from Microsoft again to see if you missed anything

Here's what I did:

1. Created a system restore point ( in case something goes wrong ).
2. Requested the hotfix from Microsoft.
3. Downloaded the file when e-mailed to me a few minutes later.
4. Since it is a zip file, double-clicked in the downloaded file and created a file on my 'C' drive to extract the unpacked file into ( I named it "hotfix" ).
5. Open the file and double-click on the file inside - the one that ends in .msu. It is an update file and should install like any other Microsoft Windows update file.

Hopefully, that will help. Give it a try and if it won't go, we'll try something else.Good luck.

You say this began when you replaced the disk drive. Can you put your old drive back in and see if the problem continues? Did you change the disk drive settings AHCI/IDE/RAID in the BIOS?

I did exactly that and still the same thing, when i open the unziped file there is only one file in it labled "Windows6.1-KB2645594-x64" and when I launch it, it says checking for updates, then the update is not applicable to your computer.

well, i changed it because the old one had a different problem, sometimes it would start up real slow but no freezes ever. But the Bios your talking about, which one should i change it to? because a friend installed it for me. Sorry im a bit of a noob at these things.

Got another thought - yours MIGHT have the update already. Or, the Ultimate version might have the patch on it. There is a 2nd hotfix for the FX chips - kb#2646060. If the first one will not let you install if, try the second one and see if it will install. Good luck and post back with results.

You need to back up and give us the beginning. You cannot just pull a drive, stick another one in, and boot up Windows. That will never ever work. There must have been some other steps.

Was the original drive running in any RAID mode?
Was the original drive cloned to the new one?
Was Windows installed fresh on the new drive?
Was a partition copied?

You did not identify your source so I assume so I assume you used a Windows retail DVD for the install. I suggest downloading the OEM drivers and re-installing Windows. When the install process asks if you want to install any drivers, install the latest OEM drivers then proceed with the install.

Btw idk if this has anything to do with it, but this update wont install:Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932). It comes up in my bottom right of my screen and says update ready to install. It always fails.
EDIT: Nvm it worked on my 3rd try.
