I was running a manual virus scan with Charter Security Suite on all files types using advanced heuristics. The scan was almost complete when the computer shut off. I was able to restart in Safe Mode and then regularly. I ran the scan again with the same result. A minidump was created. I tried to send the info to Microsoft but got an error (sorry don't remember this one).

What do I need to do?
THANKS!

Hello ssmross.

Apparently I am seeing that all the crash reports are hardware related, machine check exceptions, Stop 0x124; and not apparently related with any virus scanners etc. Do you connect any media player or digital camera etc portable device with the computer?

  • Click the start button.
  • In the search bar of the start menu, type "services.msc" without quotes.
  • Click the resulting link, it will open the Services window.
  • Scroll down to "Portable Device Enumerator Service"
  • Double Click it, it will Open the "Properties" dialog.
  • Under General tab, see the startup type is set as "Manual". Click on it to expand the other options.
  • Select "Disable". Click on "Apply". When applied, click on OK. And exit the services window.
Earlier I told that apparently the virus scanner is not connected with the crashes. But if the portable device is infected itself (that is always possible), this situation may occur. So scan them too, alongwith the entire computer, using the following applications preferably:

Let us know the results.

I do connect my digital camera and I have 2 external hard drives. I ran both of these programs without devices attached. Zero issues/results. I will run this weekend with devices attached and post results.

I could not get TDSSKiller to scan the external drives. I did run the Charter Security (F-Secure) on them. No threats/issues.

It will disable the Portable Device Enumerator Service. Nothing more. The device will work normally when you will attach it. I suggested it to you, coz I found it necessary there :)

Good news. It ensures that those devices themselves are threat free. Now, follow the other instruction (obviously in you want to; there is no compulsion :))and let us know the result.
