Computer stutters when watching video or listening to music

My computer stutters like in this video: Computer stuttering while watching videos

My specs are here:
Product Specifications HP Pavilion dv6-2064ca Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

This only happens when watching a video or listening to music, and does not happen when playing games.

I notice specifically a update for the audio codec that machine uses there.
I would apply that before anything else.

Just tried that, still have the stuttering.

I think that somehow made the stuttering worse because I now have stuttering when playing games.

How old is the PC? Has it been doing this since the beginning? Have you added software? What have you added? Are you still using Norton? Make sure you are up-to-date on all drivers.

Had my laptop for 1 and a half years. Started doing this about 2 months ago. Just upgraded my graphics driver, still get the stutter.

Has Defrag been run on the disk? Try that first and see if the stutter goes away or gets "better".

Another thought is to reset your current codecs and settings, installing cccp will do it you just have to click the rereg filters and reset settings at the end of the installl.

If it is a codec problem hopefully using that reset feature at the end of the pack install process will clean it up.

Edit - another thing to test does it do the same thing using this?

Just did that, stuttering doesn't seem to be improved. Just installed CCCP and did what you said. Will update later.

If it magically stops stuttering in vlc we can assume a codec issue, since vlc uses it's own internal codecs.

Well whenever I watch videos in VLC it never stutters, but if I listen to music in VLC it sometimes stutters.

edit: nvm still stutters with videos on vlc

MP3 support is built into windows now. I can't figure what codec could have gotten screwy that would cause this.

There is the possible issue of your hard drive failing but it really doesn't sound like that either since you'd have other problems.
If you don't mind doing something that might be a little difficult. I would like to check your system for bad device drivers.

note: DV is a bit of a pain sometimes I'll understand if you don't want too. I just used to reading minidumps and dv is good at producing them.

Could be a DPC latency issue. Download this program (DPC Latency Checker) and see if it shows green bars.

Schroff87, I downloaded that and its sometimes green sometimes red and sometimes turns red when I watch a YouTube video but its not all the time. Also the suttering has seemed to be reduced a bit now.

Hey Maguscreed, I did that verifier thing and my computer could not start up normally, right after the windows logo there would be a bsod then it would restart. So I had to go into safe mode to disable verifier.

@Schroff87 I googled it but couldnt really find anything, most were just lag for games, which I'm not experiencing now

That's actually good see if there is anything in c:\windows\minidump now

It creates pops, cracks in sound and frame skips in videos in addition the video game issue which was caused by nvidia's drivers on a specific chipset as you may have noticed in your search and is easily rectified by altering a setting in the bios. Hope it is fixed with this driver checking thing.
