Computer turns back on 3-5 seconds after pressing sleep

A few days ago, my computer stopped sleeping. When I press the sleep button, my screens will fade to black, and then just turn back on again after a few seconds. I can't think of anything that changed to cause this. I have tried:

  • Sleeping from the command line (same result as button)
  • Closing amp WinOFF (had this for a while, but just to be sure)
  • Disabling Wake-On-Lan
  • Unplugging nonessential devices
  • System restore - Failed
  • Unplugging my DP monitor, in case it was that weird power issue I've heard about
The only think I can think of that might have caused it is a system update. Does anyone either know how to fix this, or a place I could find an error log? I couldn't find anything myself in Event Viewer, but I'm not an expert at it. Also I doubt this is worth noting, but it sets my Skype to offline. System specs are relevant. Any ideas?

Lastwake and the event log turned up nothing for me. I'm guessing it's the graphics drivers, AMD recently released new ones: Previous

Should I downgrade to 14.4 then, or try reinstalling 14.9? I had some sort of error during the last install.

I'd try the lastest display driver. See if you can find it without the ATI software package.

Ah, thanks maxie. There was a message saying drivers are interfering from Windows entering sleep mode and one message saying programs are preventing Windows from entering sleep mode. The program was AMP WinOFF, however, after uninstalling it, it still wouldn't sleep. The drivers were AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver and VirtualBox Bridged Networking Drivers. Also, if it's relevent, there were 3 drivers that were slowing down resume from sleep, two of which were "Etrom eXtensible Hub Driver, whatever that is. Last was Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Reflector. Here is the pop-up boxes.

Ok, don't ask me how, but I managed to downgrade my display drivers and I can sleep again. The (un)installers didn't exactly work, but after rebooting I somehow managed to be on CCC 14.4. Now, my computer randomly wakes up. Power-Troubleshooter shows various times such as 3:00 AM, 3:31AM, 6:12AM, 6:20AM, etc. All lastwake is telling me is that the "Power Button" turned on my computer, which is definently a lie. I think I'll try to apply that bios update, unless you guys have any better ideas. Is there somewhere that will tell me what actually turned on my computer?

Uninstall CCC bloatware and install only the display driver.

What display driver does Win7 want via Updates?

Great, I can't sleep again for some reason. What do you mean by bloatware? I do use some of the other features like the mDP audio driver. Also, last time I tried uninstalling it didn't work very well. The uninstaller never made any progress, my mDP monitor stopped working, my USB mouse stopped working (glad I still use PS/2 keyboard lol), all in all it wasn't a very good experience. Is there a better way?

Bloatware is unnecessary software that accompanies the driver which is all that's needed. It may provide more features but if they are not needed then it can also spy on you via its updater, waste resources for no added benefits, and cause issues we see here regularly with CCC. The Best Practice for best Win7 performance is not to use any bloatware. A million users have shed it from their store bought PC's following http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164
and nearly two million have turned it off from starting with Windows following http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1401-startup-programs-change.html.

One benefit of doing the Clean Reinstall is to start fresh with only the drivers Win7 wants. These steps are important enough they are printed in red in the tutorial. Those steps compile everything that's worked best in tens of thousands of installs we've directly helped with here. They work just as well for home builds.

Have you also worked through the http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63567-power-options-sleep-mode-problems.html?

Did perchance your Display driver update itself from the older version that worked? You may need to be sure you uninstall the faulty driver software in Device Manager and Control Panel Programs.

Sorry, but I want to avoid a clean install if at all possible. It is way too much effort and I lose all my registery tweaks, have to reinstall everything, etc. My PC is a custom build anyway, I installed Windows myself.

If I try to uninstall the AMD Catalyst Install Manager in control panel, I get the following error:
Error 1325.Documents is not a valid short file name.
I think this is caused due to the fact I Cut-Paste the contents of my user folder (except AppData and stuff, but including the Documents folder) to my HDD (D:/Home). I found this tutorial on how to fix it, and the My Documents folder in my user folder is showing up as a protected operating system file (hidden by default). I couldn't open at first and after using Take Ownership, it said it refers to a location that is unavailable. I tried editing the registry from this thread and still can't access it. This problem is turning out to be a lot harder than I'd expected it to be.

I wasn't even trying to move my user folder, I wanted all the junk folders programs create there and in my documents to stay there. (Why don't they all use AppData?) The main other thing I have done is disable autoplay, which for some reason wasn't easy.

After fixing the user folder I was able to get the uninstall manager to open. I uninstalled everything, rebooted, and still can't sleep. Weirdly, my computer seems to be functioning perfectly fine. There's no tray icon for CCC nor is it on the Desktop right click menu, yet Minecraft runs perfectly fine and recognizes my graphics card. This is what it says if it's helpful:
AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
4.4.12874 Compatibility Profile Context 14.100.0.0
Also, my mDP monitor is function perfectly fine. It was not while I was in the process of uninstalling. Also, I tried updating the USB 3.0 Drivers for my motherboard and it froze on "The InstallShield Wizard is updating () of Etron USB3.0 Host Controller to version 0.118" with no progress.

When you refer earlier to "all my registry tweaks" it immediately sets off alarm bells here, just as if you'd have said "I used a Registry Cleaner." There's a great likelihood you've corrupted Win7. We know for sure it isn't the pristine, perfect OS it would be after following and sticking with the steps in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 which are the same for retail.

Download, install, decline Trial version, update and Run a full scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

Then run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

This problem has somehow been fixed between un- and reinstalls. It's lasted for a week now. However, my brother is now having the same issue. His computer has a Nvidia graphics card and no DP/HDMI monitors, and also no registry changes. This makes me thing a lot of people would be having this issue. He has an Alienware PC. I can't remember the exact model, let me know if you want it/specs. Here's the info in performance. As you can see, Nvidia drivers are playing a huge factor.

Does he also tweak the OS? Is it the HP Factory install?

Do a reinstall following steps given and like a million others you will have a perfect install which will stay that way for exactly as long as you stick only with the tools and methods given.
