If you count supermarkets as industrial they use a system called just-in-time. the system works by every-time a product is scanned at the checkout it logs it. the benefit is that when there isn't enough stock on the shelves it is restocked. This can also tell how much stock is in the warehouse and can automatic order more stock. The benefit of all of this is that warehouses can be smaller giving more shop space.
Computers are used in industrial technology in ways that people would never think of, for example: Some computers operate and control machinery that would take hours to do by hand but one click with the use of a computer, there are many uses and to be honest this really depends on what area of industrial technology you are talking about.
