well if the logs have never been wiped you could check the system logs to see when the first message popped up.
right click my computer click manage

All new laptops and PC's are "used before". They all go through a "burn in" period after assembly to make sure that they are going to function as advertised.

What gives you the impression that it is used?

I tried it.. didn't find any clear answer...

All new laptops and PC's are "used before". They all go through a "burn in" period after assembly to make sure that they are going to function as advertised.

What gives you the impression that it is used?

just when I bought it, I didn't look at the pack, but when I got home the "sticker" on the pack was cut.. I thought that they just checked the content of the pack and that there is nothing missing.. anyway, when I go to "uninstall or change programs" at control panel, I found out that some programs were installed from 11/2011 (starting programs such as HP games, connection manager.. etc).. and I bought the computer yesterday.. so I don't know :\

When you first booted up, did it bring you to a welcome screen where you could create your own account?
when I first opened it, I had screen saying "preparing windows for the first time" or something like that, later I created my own account and registered the product at HP's website.

The OS and programs on a new PC are installed from a drive image. The same image might be used for weeks or months, until it is updated. It is not unusual for programs to appear to have been installed a few months earlier, since that is when they were installed on the drive image. That doesn't necessarily mean that the computer is "used".

Any new laptop which comes preloaded with windows, has to be installed by the OEM manufacturer before he dispatches it to the stores. This will install the windows and the bloatware from manufacturer. Probably the date you have seen 11/2011 is the date on which the windows is preloaded and preactivated.

From that time till you operate the system for the first time no one has used it (which is proved as you got the message "preparing windows for the first time").

I got a new Toshiba laptop from Amazon USA and it was a similar experience like yours. So be assured that you got a new laptop in mint condition and start enjoying it.

I am going to take a different approach to your question.
Assuming that it has been used before, the only component that would possibly have a decreased life expectancy is the Hard Drive, since it the only moving part. All other components do not wear out, as does the Hard Drive; although they can, of course break. Run the chkdsk function on your computer and then defrag; if all is ok just enjoy. Any software can be downloaded again, if problems develop.
I do wish you the best of luck with your computer.
