So far I have created a password for the XP machine (and I still have it set up so that I have to log into the XP machine whenever I start it)

I have the XP machine seeing the Win 7 machine but although I was able to upload files to the Win 7 machine a day or two ago, I cannot to so today--I get a "network path was not found" message. And when I run the network connection wizard it comes up with the radio button next to "do not share files and printers" checked....even though I ran it yesterday and turned it on.

I have the 7 machine seeing the XP machine but when I try to access files on the XP machine I am asked for a username and password. When I start my XP machine I am asked for a password and my username is already entered DW). That account is also an administrative account (maybe that's the problem...I need to create a separate account without administrative control??...Naw, that's too obvious, someone would have suggested that before)

Anyway that's where it stands at this moment. Dead in the water...

If you connect from one machine to the other, and get a prompt to put in the username and password, this is what it wants. I don't know what other setups you have with Homegroups or whatever but if this is a connection/logon issue than that's what it is.


I don't know if my tut in my sig on file sharing helps, but have a look at it. File and Printer sharing needs to be turned on in W7.

Hey! I can use all the help I can get. If it's as straight-forward as all of that then there can't be all that many divergent approaches. They all have to be doing pretty much the same thing.

Same as it was in post #34. I checked the bios on both machines and except for the time format they were both correct to time. That's the last thing I did.

I'll I'll run through your file sharing tut tomorrow. but at first glance it looks familiar. I might have already seen it...or something like it.

I'm sure it something simple that you've missed. Can't guarantee anything if your setup is one which includes firewalls, third party apps, homegroups etc.

Well the Op already messed up by attempting to create a Homegroup when there were other Op systems involved besides Windows 7. Although he left the Homegroup that may or may not still be causing problems.

I have already covered the basics and we are well past that point by now. I would advise the Op to reinstall both XP and Windows 7 and start from scratch. That is certainly how I would handle this if my own system had this type of problem. Move to a safe distance and nuke the Op system from space....It's the only way to be sure.

I have to take that with a grain of salt but if it's anywhere near to being true, it's another strike against the bozos at Microsoft and against Windows 7. It's no wonder most people stuck with XP when vista was released. at this point, I am wishing I had done the same.

Again I point out the number of people in this sub-topic having problems networking...problems identical or similar to mine. It shouldn't be this hard, folks.

Why should I rebuild anything? I have a brand new, less than two weeks old, Windows 7 x64 professional machine with roughly six additions to the OS beyond the basic install of Windows and whatever diagnostic crap that Dell put on the box. It seems to run reliably except for its inability to access a remote computer. I have an XP machine...that I have kept clean and defragged and been diligent about...that does every task I ask it to do including seeing and accessing files on the Win7 machine, with no complaint.

If Windows 7 is so fragile that I cannot create a Homegroup and then leave it without destroying the OS, I ought to be dumping Windows 7, not thinking about rebuilding. We all ought to be.

As for six pages...better to contemplate the over 3,000 threads in the Networking sub-topic (and over 24,000 posts) alone...and I suspect less than 30% successful resolutions of the questions that instigated those threads.

What's wrong with this picture folks?

And I have never demeaned nor denigrated anyone's advice here. In fact, I have taken and tried almost everything people have offered. And I have assiduously thanked people even if they offered little or nothing new.

But I'm not up for rebuild. Not in this lifetime...not for so little and so spurious a reason.

That guy's got issue with is setup, his ipconfig tells you that his router which broadcasts the wireless network, hasn't given his W7 the correct info for things to work. This is a router/ISP issue. W7 can only obtain what is given to it.

Both these issues are not caused by W7, they are caused by lack of understand on the user's behalf. Understanding can be an issue for the best of us.

All issues stems from somewhere, you cannot continue on with what you want to do if you haven't got the simple things correct. Coverying up poo doesn't mean it won't smell no more.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the help and the links to the tutorials.

Remarkably, and contrary to canonical wisdom, I was finally able to get my Win 7x64 Professional system to see and share files with my Win XP sp3 system. And even more shockingly...I didn't have to rebuild either OS. Setting up and joining Homegroups and then leaving them did not break the system, asynchronous dates and times in the bios wasn't in it.

The one question I kept asking...to utter silence...about my username for logging into the XP, turned out to be the key. Only trial and error applied with "relentless patience" revealed the answer.

"For once we are saved by incompetence."

Yes I only reapeated the part about using the same user name and password about twenty times.

Bottom line, if the user fixed the problem then the problem was user error as usual.

Maybe once, definately not twenty. You gave me good advice about the Homegroups and you commented about passwords several times.

But it was the username that was the problem.

And I kept asking "what username and password?" Because, if I may refresh your memory, I had originally set up my XP computer with no username and password (post #11). And yes, I had password protected sharing turned off on the Win 7 machine right from the beginning.

And then, despite my druthers, I ended up creating a username and password on the XP machine...taking your advice among others, if I recall correctly (post #30)...which was attached to the main user/administration account. Yet, as I kept saying, the username I created (and the one I log onto my XP machine with) did not/does not work when I enter it into the prompt to access the network. The password does.

If the truth be known...as I mentioned several times...I got good advice from you and others here. Mostly.

And I thanked you then and I thank you now. Sincerely.

What p**ses me off is the "fan-boy" attitude that has to defend a product that many people see as flawed. A product...or an aspect of it...that, if nothing else, is not clear to those of us who aren't so enlightened as you. And defend it to the point where those of us looking for answers somehow become thorns in the side of all those who know better.

Honestly now...think about it...you don't own Microsoft. Windows 7 wasn't your idea. It's not your dog. You can be objective about it. No one will think the worse of you.

Because when people become so entrenched and so blinded that they start giving out advice like rebuilding the whole OS on a brand new system, and then progress to blaming those who are seeking clarity in the midst of a confusing muddle, they do more harm than good.

If I had taken the advice to rebuild my OS I suspect my computer (or computers) would be dead in the water and I would have a lot more problems than I do now (or did then).

If I were suspicious, I would think there was some malicious intent involved in giving such thoughtless and unsympathetic advice.

What people end up doing is to use the same user name and password on all machines to avoid that password prompt. At least that way you still have a password to gain entry even if they are all the same.

Although the Password protected sharing option in Advanced Sharing settings toggled either on or off should take care of that for you, it doesn't seem consistant for some reason.

I don't use user passwords so I havn't had to mess with any of that.

So I guess you missed this? Page 2 post 12, I didn't waste much time getting to the fix for your problem. I thought you mentioned that you tried that already.

I even mentioned that toggling the password protected setting seemed a bit flaky for some it seemed like. I never set up any user passwords so I never had this problem with accessing other XP machines.
