connect directly to another computer without using the net

i wish to be able to connect directly to another computer without using the net, a way to do it that will not use any of my download data or the data of anyone else, like putting in an IP and connecting so that we may share files, a step by step tutorial would be very helpful

If you have the two computers networked together via a router that has an internet connection, transferring files between the computers on the local network will NOT use any of your data allotment from your ISP.

Hi steel865,

You may choose to use a crossed over cable to connect the 2 computers for files sharing as advised by Ztruker or..... connect the computers directly to your router's LAN Ports or Network Switch and just don't connect to the Internet at all by removing the DNS and Gateway entries on the LAN settings of both computers.

You will have to assign Manual or Static IP's on both computers, but remember not to include the DNS and Gateway Addresses.

What? Are you serious? With out the net? What you're asking for is not possible unless you have access to satellites. Which I'm pretty sure you don't. And even then you would need to do it via the network card. That's how computers can communicate to each other. Short of them physically together with USB as mentioned the network is the only way across large distances.

In that case there is really only one way. Good, old-fashioned "sneaker net". Copy files to a floppy, CD or thumb drive and mail them across the country.

If both PC's have an Internet connection "Windows Live Mesh" may be an option. You have to sign up for a windows live ID but its all free. It's part of Windows Live Essentials.

Yeah, I know but unless the two PC's are in the same room good luck with that. Thats not meant to be sarcastic but I think thats as free as you're going to get. Its just an option.

The original poster is going to have to use the net one way or another. I find DropBox good for moving large files (free for 2GB storage). You just upload and send your buddy the url.
