Solved Connected but with no internet !

OK...

I feel much better now :-)

I was thinking about the motherboard lately, after I had excluded so many other things.

So I downloaded the "Hot Cpu" software and gave it a run on the computer.
It took less than 5 minutes for the system to crash and for the motherboard to collapse.

Now the computer is dead and it does not even load the BIOS.

Motherboard is dead. I am kinda happy because I now know what was wrong...

The only thing that still lingers in my mind, is how on earth did linux connect with the internet??!!

So I consider this thread solved. If I get a new montherboard and still have the same issues, I will bother you all again.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. It was invaluable !!

Nope !! I was wrong .... It's ALIVE !!

The motherboard got overheated and after half an hour I turned on the power to take out the CD's .... and oh miracle of miracles it booted again !!!

I took a different approach this time....
I "borrowed" my sons tp link wireless usb network adapter.
It took me a lot of time to figure out which version it was... after a while I downloaded all 3 versions and tried them all..

It was version 1.
it got identified and although the drivers were correct and could "see" the adapter correctly, it was appearing for a couple of seconds on the hardware system list, and then dissappeared.. and then back on and off... an so on...

I slapped the linux USB in to see if it would work. It identified the card, and the wireless network, and then the card disappeared... and then reappeared.. and so on...

Deja vu... !!

I think though that all these are consistent with a faulty MB... I can't think of anything else...

Problem is ... I don't feel good... I have GOT to SOLVE this mystery :(
