Connected to Internet - Browser does not work

Hey guys,

so I have this problem: My Desktop is connected to my router vie WiFi and it says I have connection to the Internet. However, i cannot access any website, be it by typing in the name or the IP adress.

At the same time, I can ping all websites. I can find them via tracert, which also nicely resolves the IP adresses of any sites I type in. I also tried two different WiFi dongles (Cisco and D-Link) both have identical problems.

I reset the winsocket and i tried to log in as another user - to no avail.

To make things even stranger, I cannot even access the router (192.168.1.1), but i CAN access the NAS connected to the router (192.168.1.100).

The laptop which is connected to the router via WiFi has no troubles accessing either the router or the outside world so I am fairly certain that the problem lies with my computer and not with the access point.

My computer gets his IP via DHCP (fixed on 105) and is within the same subnetmask as the router and has the routers IP adress as standard gateway (all that via dhcp).

Anybody got ideas?

Thanks,
KToff

Sounds like it is not resolving the DNS

See if you don't have a firewall setting that is blocking port TCP/UDP 53.

Thanks for the quick reply, but i do not think the firewall is causing the issue.

When firewalls and virusscanner are deactivated the problem persists... I only have a windows firewall (i think).

Also, tracert does resolve dns... so it appears to be browserspecific (and by browserspecific i mean all browsers i tried, IE, FF and chrome).

This is indeed a strange one. Do you experience the same issues if you connect via Ethernet, and i'm assuming you have run Network diagnostics and have not received any errors?

Hey clinkz,

i have run the windows network diagnostics and I have found no error. I have not tried it via ethernet as I did not want to get the 20 meter cable out of some box in our storage room, but maybe i´ll try that tonight and report back with the results.

In my opinion, the strangest thing of all is that I cannot access the router (Asus RT-N56U), which correctly assigns an IP adress through dhcp, via its local adress. Simultaneously, I can access the Linkstation duo which is attached to the router.

Also, Steam did not seem to have any troubles downloading an update....

Thats the strange things about all this, I've not been able to log into the my router before but a reset has promptly fixed that.. and it also sounds like DNS isn't working, but then you are able to resolve domains..will be interesting to see what happens when you physically connect.

And it is not that the routers admin site is unresponsive per se, the laptop manages just fine to log in and modify settings...

So the router is on, it assigns correctly IP adresses to all three clients (Laptop, desktop and NAS) and it can be configured when it is accessed by the laptop but the 192.168.1.1 does not respond when trying to get there from the desktop...

Sounds a bit like the router is stopping outgoing on port 80. You could try switching your router off and back on so that all is reset if there is some sort of logic latch?

Hey wilywombat,

I have not hard-reset the router yet, but I have restarted it multiple times. Also it is only one of the two computers connected via WiFi which has that problem. Could it still be a block on port 80?

As its just one of 2 computers it sounds more like the computers firewall rather than the router...try downloading a copy of Comodo firewall and install as this will take over from the windows firewall (you may have to turn off the windows firewall though)and has great ratings as well. If the problem is with the windows firewall this should fix it.

Thanks, I will try that tonight. However, what I already tried is to turn the Windows firewall off and accessing the internet without any firewall at all. Result --> No change

I would go back and hard reset your router and put your settings in again as this sounds a bit strange as we are getting conflicting symptoms.

Ok so the problem persist: Router reset or cable does not change anything about the situation. A quick summary:

What I can do (I have the problem with the desktop):
1. Surf quickly on the Internet with my laptop through Wireless and access all router configuration sites.
2. Get a DHCP IP adress with standard gateway and DNS server with different wifi usb stick and via lan-cable
3. Access the website of our local NAS
4. Acess our local NAS through the windows network and copy and read files from there
5. Log in to Steam and download Updates with very good speed
6. Ping my router and trace websites where the adresses are resolved via tracert

What I cannot do:
1. Access the Website of my router
2. Access any Website on the Inet with any browser (Chrome/IE/FF)

A short clarification, when I say cannot access I mean it loads forever. And today I noticed that if you wait long enough (10 min+) text from a website starts appearing. I did not wait any longer, but there was no error, just not (yet) completely loaded.... Also after a couple of minutes my router asked me for a password to access the config website........

I really REALLY do not want to reinstall Windows but do you guys see another chance?

So really the title, that i apparently cannot edit, should be "Internet connection present and fast - Browser unbearably (like pre-dial-up-modem) slow"

Have you got a spare router?
Are you on DSL or Cable
If cable connect to modem and see if that works..
Suspected router at fault...

Hi,
I am on cable. Just tried to connect it directly to the cable modem. I get a nice IP adress and evrything. Same error :-(

So at least it is not the routers fault...

P.S. Luckily I have a second computer for testing, otherwise I would scream bloody murder at my provider :-)

Ok
Uninstall Browser and then re-install browser.

Done, and it doesn't change anything...

However, I just reverted my windows back by a week and now everything is back to normal. I have no clue what is wrong, but it appears that it had something to do with a faulty windows update...

Thank you guys for the help... Although this probably will stay an unsolved issue...
