Connecting my computer to TV via HDMI won't work?

Hi, recently I tried to connect my my desktop computer to my TV. The main display is an acer monitor connected via DVI cable, and now I want to use an HDMI cable to connect to the TV which it does not seem to work. The graphics chip is an AMD 760g, no graphics card to use at the moment.
When I go to screen resolution, the only option displayed there, when trying to extend to a second monitor, is "Display device on: VGA" as the only option, no HDMI there. I remember when I did get it to connect to the TV, it only displayed on the TV, and the monitor was now blank.
Is there any solution to this?

Justabluejay mate have you got a HDMI port on the computer if you haven't then you will not be able to hook it up via that method. If the TV has a DVI port then you will be able to hook up then you will get video but the audio will have to hook up using dedicated cables (RCA to RCA).

Now just in case I have it wrong because the specs listed at the bottom quote a laptop can you post some details / specs about the machine in question http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html or at very least the motherboard details.

Oh yeah, the system specs i listed on my page is outdated.
Windows 7 Home Premium
16 GB DDR3 RAM
AMD FX-8350
Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M USB3
AMD Chipset 760G

It does have an HDMI port in the back as well as a DVI Port. My TV only supports the HDMI and VGA ports tho. I was hoping to set the sound settings to go through the HDMI cable if it could connect through the TV, but I have a feeling that it might not be able to do both HDMI and DVI at the same time, since it works fine with VGA when I use that.

No mate you just need the HDMI it carries both the graphics and audio there should not be any problem apart from trailing a lead across to the TV from the Computer.
I do this with my laptops from time to time to is really quite easily done. Personally I am not a fan of HDMI simply because it is such a simple fit and prone to coming out (in my experience) at the least tug on the lead.

So hook and play something on the computer with it connected to the TV and then skip through the HDMI points until it gets to the right one. If it doesn't come through on any you may have to go and do the driver updates .

Now to me that you either need to update the driver for the graphical output (if you haven't done them already) and also find the correct setting on your TV - usually they give you options for DTV AV HDMI 1, 2 3 (often just 1 & 2) etc on the TV via the remote.

Now for the drivers if you haven't done them already these are what you need and I would at least do the VGA and chipset ones. Motherboards - M5A78L-M/USB3 - ASUS

The HDMI cable does go through for the TV. The only problem is that I want to use it as an extended screen from my monitor, but apparently it does not go through for using both a DVI for the monitor and an HDMI For the TV. Whenever it displays on the TV, even when I set the screen settings to "Extend" and set the resolutions the right size for each, it only displays on the TV and not the monitor which is not what I wanted. I'll probably have to stick to VGA.
Also, I have installed the drivers from the CD that was given to me in the box for the mobo.

Mmm Bluejay I thought I posted earlier re the drivers mate but it must have gone astray as the machine I was on has been a bit strange all day so sorry for late reply.

What I was saying was the drivers on the disk are probably way behind the current ones as they are invariably out of date before the disk is out of the factory. So try the ones from the link I sent.

Okay I downloaded them and the problem still remains. I can't connect both to DVI And HDMI at once for extend the screen.

I know, I have been doing that on the one and only HDMI channel I have, the problem is that it only posts to one screen, so the DVI monitor and the HDMI TV can't both be used at the same time to extend the screen like I wanted it to. I had thought that my on-board video doesn't support that, and I still think that since updating the drivers didn't do that.

Now it seems to me that somewhere the connecting of the HDMI to the TV and the DVI to the monitor is somehow cancelling one out. So if I am repeating myself the TV wokrs with just it hooked up with HDMI but doen't when you hook the DVi to the monitor.

Now I don't know if even this will work but if you had a dedicated GPU card installed and hooked both leads to it if it would work and I don't know if there are any ways of splitting the signal in that scenario. In fact if this were possible it would really load the GPU up maybe to strain it until it gave up the ghost.

Not being funny again but why do you need two screens? Myself I would be quite annoyed at having two running at the same time because of the distraction and I am sure if you set the resolution to 1920x1080 for the TV it would be a better graphics than the monitor.

Yes it seems to cancel the other out.

Basically, I was going to just use my TV Screen to watch movies from my computer without giving up the whole screen so I can multitask in a way, also to be able to have the sound come out from my TV speakers for watching a movie that way would be nice. Also it's not able to go 1080p, only 720p or 1080i so it would cut off some parts of the screen. But yeah overall, it'd be just nice to have sometimes.

Ah I get what you mean now - but why can't you set the resolution to 1920x1080 on the machine? All of my desktops have I. Now a I don't know if a half decent GPU might be the answer??

Now I run Asus GTX 650's in mine bar one and hat is the Ti model in the main desktop and even the new Asus laptop runs that res now. Worth trying to find out about as the really are not that expensive now.

I'm fairly sure the graphics chipset on the mobo can support 1080p, it was the actual TV set itself that doesn't support 1080p. I tried it with my laptop from 2010 and it just can't go to 1080p simply because it doesn't support it, yet it connected perfectly with a TV that did support 1080p. I assume the chipset is about the same in supporting 1080p, just my TV, being an older HDTV (probably when HDMI was less common as it only has 1 HDMI port and 2 component cable set ports on the back) it just can't support it.

Yes well it does depend on the "receiving" end when all is said and done pity though. Having said that HDMI is not that old a technology considering some of the stuff we use.

Purely out of curiosity what make and model is the TV?? it has got me thinking now.
