Connecting New Laptop to Monitor Question

I recently purchased a sager 2740 laptop from xoticpc and it will take a while to receive it and have question. I always used laptop or desktop and connected it to monitor.


My asus laptop i connected it to a monitor via VGA the blue cable. There isn't a dvi spot on my laptop.


I also have an xps 8100 desktop that could connect to a monitor by either VGA or DVI- the white/gray cable.


With my asus u45jc-a1, is vga or hdmi my only 2 options to connect to a monitor?


I assume hdmi is always an option to connect from any laptop to a monitor? Is hdmi basically any method of connecting computer to monitor such as vga or dvi?


I took a look at the sager 2740 laptop specifications and i see hdmi but i don't see vga or dvi. Does that mean i will have to get an HDMI cable to connect to a monitor? Or does it has the vga or dvi? Obviously if it has vga or dvi i wouldn't need to get an hdmi cable. Just want to make sure here as i haven't used an hdmi cable.

Also, is there a reason why ppl need very long hdmi? I assume if you going to connect a laptop to a big tv across the room, you going to need a pretty long hdmi? But if you just going to connect the monitor to the laptop very close, then 10 feet is more then enough? I will be connecting the sager 2740 to an external monitor the whole time and want to make sure it would work

Hi that is what im not sure yet. Because i will have to buy the new monitor. I will be going out of the country and then would be purchasing the new monitor. The thing is its 100 percent going to be a monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution so its pretty much 100 percent going to be a 24' monitor.


So the monitor will most likely be an HP, Asus or maybe Dell. But from what i see on amazon... 1 or 2 of these monitors don't support HDMI. It seems almost all of them support vga and dvi but i can't do that b/c my new sager laptop 2740 doesn't seem to offer it.


It basically is


1 x HDMI 1.4a output Port (with HDCP)
1 x Mini DisplayPort 1.2 output Port
3 x USB 3.0 Ports (One powered USB port, AC/DC)
1 x Headphone Jack
1 x Microphone Jack
1 x RJ-45 LAN (10/100/1000Mbps)


So how would i connect to the monitor if it doesn't have HDMI? If it does, obviously its pretty simple as you connect hdmi from sager laptop to the monitor. But if it doesn't, then my only option would be the mini display port? I checked amazon and see a few of those things but if i get that, i have to get the mini display port to hdmi right? Or would getting the minidisplay port to vga or dvi be best option since the monitor will almost always have VGA or DVI? But more than often VGA?


Also if the monitor does allow HDMI, would either of those links i posted work? Because i see that the sager laptop says


1 x HDMI 1.4a output Port (with HDCP).


So it needs like an up to date hdmi as its 1.4a? So either of those links i posted aren't 1.4a?


Srry just really confused with this. I always been use to using vga to laptop and thus when i saw this new laptop i purchased online recently doesn't have vga... i had thought okay how am i going to connect it to monitor if the monitor doesn't have hdmi.

The current monitor im using with my asus u45jc-a1 is a Dell 2007fp. I connect it via vga cable. Both laptop and desktop are many years old. I don't even see an hdmi port on the 2007fp. Does that mean when i get my sager laptop... i wouldn't even be able to connect to this monitor b/c it doesn't have hdmi port? Again i wont be using this monitor as my main monitor connected to the sager, i would be purchasing a new one when i leave out the country and will be using it outside the country connected to the sager laptop.

It probably does not matter which way you go with getting a new monitor for new laptop.

If you decide on HDMI then it would probably be sensible to get a monitor that has an HDMI input connection. HDMI does provide audio through the cable so if you want audio at the monitor you had better look at a monitor that has speakers.

You can go with the Display mini Port but you would need an adapter to to convert that to either HDMI or DVI.

You can also get HDMI adapters to DVI as well but they wont provide audio.

It's always best to keep cables as short as possible, as long cables lose picture quality. A 10' HDMI cable is fairly long & unless you actually need it that long it might be best to go with a shorter one.

Hey. Can you explain what you mean hdmi provide audio but hdmi adapter to dvi there isn't audio? what do you mean by that? So that means there won't be any sounds like when i play music or youtube or antying if i do which method?


Yea i wanted to keep cable short b/c the laptop would be very close to the monitor. However, is there a reason ppl use 15 feet, 50 feet hdmi cables then? I know for an ethernet cable where a person wants wired internet and laptop is far away from modem/router, yes i can see that. But why would anyone ever need a very long hdmi cable then?


How much feet would you say is good for laptop to monitor? Is 6 feet perfect then?

Yea i know the easiest thing to do is get monitor with hdmi then i wont be bothered with other things. But if monitor doesn't have hdmi, then i want to know what would be the best option.


Thus get display mini port adapter that convert to dvi... but why you say convert to hdmi? How is that an option for the sager laptop? I would connect the display mini port to my sager... but then the other end would be connected to an hdmi cable? That wouldn't make sense b/c the other end of the hdmi cable can't be connected to the monitor if it does'nt have an hdmi port... so am i missing something here?


Because it seems like if monitor has no hdmi, and my sager laptop has hdmi and display miniport, isnt there only 2 options and that is....


1. Display miniport adapter to DVI

2. Display miniport adapter to VGA?


And thus always choose option dvi? Im confused how i would even do display minport adapter to hdmi here if monitor has no hdmi port.

VGA & DVI output sockets & cables from computers only carry the video signal & no audio. To get audio you have to have a separate audio cable. There is no audio connection on these, only video.
HDMI does have video as well as audio & is a much later developed cable, which was designed essentially for connecting High Definition video & audio between DVD players & recorders to TV's. But as it has audio & is easy to connect it is now available to computer users as well.
If you wanted to connect your laptop to a TV set then HDMI is probably the easiest way to go.

A 6' cable would be better. Also you wont have excess cable cluttering things up.

Is there reason ppl need that long of a cable? So basically anyone that connect a hdmi cable from laptop to tv... more often 6' is best b/c the laptop would be connected very close to the tv right? But those that want a longer cable, they just want the laptop to be say with them at the soft but the tv is many feet away from them when they watching? Is that what you mean? Also ppl that connect laptop to tv... whats their main purpose? Is it for watching a movie or something like that? Because i cant imagine its connecting it to a tv and using it as a monitor right since tvs aren't meant for monitors and most ppl would just get another monitor?

So since my new sager laptop will have hdmi, mini display and those usb 3.0s... i wont get the usb to dvi adapter if its 50 dollar whereas another option is less and basically the same thing. Someone said if i get this option it cost much more.

Yes, that is correct.

The best thing you can do is wait until you get to where you are going & then have a look at monitors that are available there & make your decision then.

A lot of people use TV's as monitors, both for computer use & for watching the web on their TV.

Hey thank you very much. Few other short questions i have. I will be buying 2 cables then, one thats an hdmi cable and another that is a HDMI to DVI cable since this old monitor i have at the moment, the only way to use it with my sager laptop would be hdmi to dvi.


1. Since the laptop connected to the monitor is going to be pretty close, is a 6 feet cable going to be good enough or it might be too short? Or should i get a 10 feet cable? I will be getting 2 cables so just wondering if i should get a little longer one as 10 feet as oppose to 6 feet or should 6 feet be more than enough. The thing is my sager laptop will be connected to the monitor and it should be pretty close. Then i will connect a keyboard to my sager laptop and that would be my keyboard.


2. Is there a reason ppl need really long hdmi or hdmi to dvi cables or dvi cables in general? The thing is if its for laptop to monitor it seems like short cable is good but why do ppl want long cable? Is it b/c the laptop is going to be far from the tv such as they want to have the laptop with them while sitting in their sofa or bed whereas the tv is like 8 feet from them and they want a 10 feet or 15 feet cable? Im curious do ppl who connect laptop to their TVs... do majority of them keep the laptop very close to the tv or its pretty far away? What i dont get is if someone has a really long hdmi or dvi or hdmi to dvi cable... isn't that not good b/c the cable will be going through the room they are in and thus through the floor and someone can't really walk across the room without having to go over it if that makes sense?



3. Better buy from walmart as oppose to ebay right? Price will be a bit more on walmart but not too much.

Bear in mind that there are 2 types of DVI socket on a pc -

DVI-D just carries the digital signal
DVI-I has digital and analog signals ( I = integrated )

if the pc has DVI-I, you can use an adapter to output an analog VGA signal (however, the extra size/weight of plug + adapter may strain the socket if not careful)

DVI-D seems to be similar to HDMI electrically (but obviously no sound on DVI), so there's no conversion involved - it's just a cable. I was testing a mobo recently that could output DVI-D, VGA and HDMI. Since I didn't have an HDMI monitor at the time, I got a DVI-HDMI cable from Amazon and got my triple displays.

Wait so you suggest i get a dvi-i instead of a dvi-d? I just took a look and the one i posted is dvi-d.

The 1st link looks like the cable I used to go from HDMI (pc) to DVI (monitor). I'm not sure about HDMI w/internet - guess it's for smart TV's. DVI-I only comes into the question when you have just a DVI-I socket on your pc, and a VGA monitor. You can get an adapter and plug your blue VGA cable into it. That's what I have used with old monitors that had the VGA cable attached. Modern monitors don't have cables attached, so I guess you could use a DVI-VGA cable in that circumstance.

Since you're interested in monitors, you might want to Google HDCP. It's a kinda content protection anti-piracy malarkey that can stop you watching certain movies or TV shows on certain combinations of gear.
