Constant Internet Drop issues

I am really hoping that someone can help me out here.

I am having extreme internet problems with my new HP G71-340US laptop. I use remote desktop access to log in to work and the damn connection is dropping constantly. I stayed connected to remote desktop access about 30 seconds before I get kicked off for losing my internet connection. I am going to be as detailed as I can but I am not a expert at computers so my descriptions and veribage might be lacking.

I recently purchased a HP G71-340US laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Installed on it. As soon as I brought it home I formatted the hard drive and installed a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I installed the drivers for the laptop from the HP site. The wireless card per the product specifications is a Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN. And I made sure to install the drivers for this particular model.

I use a Netgear WNR834B router and so I even upgraded the firmware on it to the latest one I found on their website.

I still have my old laptop, a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Professional installed on it. The wireless card on this laptop is a Dell wireless 1390 WLAN Wireless Mini card.

My Internet connection is Time Warner Road Runner Turbo.

I have both laptops up and running and both of them logged in to remote desktop access and the HP keeps constantly disconnecting while the Dell stays perfectly logged in with no hassles. This is getting to be extremly frustrating as I can't use my HP with the upgraded features to do my work.

Any and all help will be much appreciated it.

PS I've already tried HP's support and it is horrible!!! NetGear's is even worse.

I just got off the phone with HP support and they are claiming that the issues are due to my upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate, although the website claims that the drivers I installed are compatible with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. But apparently they know how to work miracles as long as I pay 60 dollars for 3 days to get upgraded support. Apparently paying for support magically allows for the drivers to work on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Is this is a bunch of BS or is there any validity to their argument of my internet problems being cause because of the upgrade?

one thing i would do is make a direct connection to your isp modem from that PC and see if problem continues that way we can start to narrow down the cause

I checked the HP site and it shows three different wireless drivers for your HP G71-340US. Are you sure you have the correct ones? It might help to look up which wireless adaptor you are using and then get the appropiate driver.

They have Anthros wireless drivers, Intel PRO wireless drivers and also Broadcom wireless drivers all for your HP laptop. I would make sure you have installed the correct ones. You might need to look up which wireless adaptor you are using.

I have yet to try a direct connection to my modem. I will try that next.

In terms of the wireless drivers. I am sure that I've downloaded the Intel drivers as per the product specs that's what's installed in my laptop.

If the direct modem connection works than you should reset your router using the reset button. Far as I can tell that is the only problem you should be having. Your router is fully compatible with Windows 7 from what I can tell.

Chev 65, I've connected directly to the modem and things worked perfectly. So I reset the router as you had suggested and I am still having problems.

Next I am going to take of the encryption on my router to see if that helps. If not, I am going to go over to my parents house to see if my laptop communicates better with their modem. If I encounter the same issue, it might be the wireless card at which point I plan on using a friends wireless adapter to see if that helps. If it does than I know it's the wireless card.

Thanks for the advice so far.

set your wireless N radio on your router to broadcast 2.4 Ghz not 5 Ghz this seems to be an issues with a lot of wireless N devices see if that helps also in the wireless adapter properties turn off power saving just to make sure

I have been seeing a pattern emerge with wireless N devices not wanting to work correctly you may want to try turning off the N radio on the router all together and in the adapter properties look for choice for radio there also set everything to G only and see what happens

always remember when having connection issues instead of doing a complete reset as chev65 suggested first try a simple reset of all of your equipment shut off all PC's unplug power to modem and router then plug power back into the modem first let it set a couple minutes in order for it to resync then plug power back into router give it a minute or two then start up your PC's

hmm I appreciate your suggestions. My Dell seems to be working fine with the settings I have right now.

I took the encryption off and the connections seems to working now. I am going to give it another 20 mins to see if it is helping. I had it set to WSP-PSA, I think, before I removed it.

encryption can be a factor I have found over the years that WEP yields the least trouble in that regard

ok the connection seems to be ok now that I removed the encryption. I am going to set it to WEP to see if that works.

Thanks!

ok I am still having problems but not as bad, lol.

Could you suggest any bandwith monitoring software that I can use to keep track of what is happening with my bandwith with all the different settings I've had
