I would like to copy an e-mail to a desktop folder, but when I right click on the message (under Search for Message) a drop down box opens showing all items listed in the extreme left pane.
For some reason I recall being able to save e-mails to another folder:confused:

From inside your eMail client (Windows Live Mail??) just drag the eMail item (from the list) from your inbox to your desktop or any other folder.

Yes, using WLM. Slartybart, did as you suggested, but when I right-clicked in the folder a window opened, saying to open with MS Word. Clicked on it and the message opened. Guess the last time I had done a copy of an e-mail was when I was using OE in WinXP. It's different! Thank you for the suggestion and a Happy New Year!

Ok something was lost in translation.

Do not right click, left click and hold the eMail you want to copy from the list (do not open, do not right click)
:tip: I focus the mouse pointer on the envelope so I do not accidently open the item.
ListMail.png
Then drag the item to the destination location and release the mouse button

I juts checked my WLM, a right click on the envelope offers Copy to folder (but drag and drop is much easier)

Sanity check - what version of WLM are you using?

I tilted my head and looked at this from a different angle ;)

You're trying to copy the eMail msg itself, not something in the eMail msg - right?

The thing that threw me off was that you said when I right-clicked in the folder a window opened, saying to open with MS Word. Clicked on it and the message opened.

If you could post a screen shot showing what you're trying to do, that would help a lot. To get the full picture, use PrtScrn and paste the copied image into Paint.
See: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html for more information on posting screen shots.

:warn: Be sure to blur, cover, or erase sensitive information such as any eMail addresses that get included in the screen capture.

Bill, I have WLM 2012. Yes I am trying to copy the email as opposed to what is in the body of the mail.

Right now, the method you described seems a bit complicated - to me. I'm planning on printing out your method and see if if works for me - will post back at a later date. Thanks again for your time.

Ralph

You can click Move and create a folder.

The email is saved in that folder-really simple to always have access to a particular email.

Here's another trick - select eMail column headings (Sender, Recipient, Date Received, Subject, flagged, etc) for that folder.

You can also use Windows Search filters for any of the column headings - it's a little tricky getting used to. Try a few simple searches sent:yesterday and then build up you confidence using search filters
See: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/286043-search-find-more-filters-operators.html

This page has a nicer layout, but the content is the same:
Windows Desktop Search Tips, Tricks, Advanced Query Syntax for Windows 7, Vista, XP

basically you have the following attributes that can be used in your searches (you don't have to be in WLM). As a matter of fact, the msgs are stored in the WLM folder can be searched the same way using Explorer search.
