every time I try at about 10% with 8 hours remaining I get the following error message an unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the open file is no longer valid

it does this at the same file every time, if I copy all files but the one that gave the error message, the next file in line will give the same message and so on.

the two are both external drives 2TB exact same make and model from the same store bought at the same time

what do I need to do do fix this and make the files copy?

Googling the error message only brought up DVDRW related problems not external hard drive problems

Alduins have you used any registry cleaners lately? if so you may have a problem with something that has been cleaned by some lousy software which most claim to enhance the machine.

What I might suggest is to try and put the data onto another separate drive and see if the problem still exists. If it doesn't then maybe the second drive is going south.
It may be then have to be a hard drive test to see if one of the drives is bad

Personally I don't like large drives to be honest as a large drive means a large mount of data and a crash mean a loss of a great deal of data.

What you might like to try is this

BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOS to boot from theoptical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL> select TRYnot INSTALL

When it is finished - it takes verylittle time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > Userand dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy /paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doingthis.

I am not sure if it will but I haverecovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or justplain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.
You may be able to transfer that data form drive to drive using this method.
