Solved Corasir Liquid cooling unit louder and hotter than two fan Noctua

Following on from my case upgrade I installed a Corsair H100 liquid cooler.

With it set to performance, the fans are spinning at 2160 RPM. Sadly, they do not respond to the controls on the Lamptron Touch. At 0% (0v) they still spin at 2160rpm.

At 2160RPM the system is 5c hotter than it was on the Noctua NH-U9B-SE2 cooler.

It is also substantially louder.

On the slowest setting the fans spin at 2160.. Ok, so it looks like the lapmtron is telling fibs... The noise is less, but still somewhat louder than it was.

The temperature on the lowest setting is 7c hotter than on the noctua.

Instead of reducing noise and temps, I;ve actually gone backwards...

As per instructions on the Corsair video - I have set the fans to pull air into the case through the radiator.

These figures are at idle.

What am I doing wrong?

This sounds quite weird to me, I have read that the H100 gives really good temps and a lot of people on the forum is using one, I am using a H80 one myself, are you using the default black corsair fans that comes with the unit because I tried those and they are insanely loud so mine is using 2 noctua fans and thats what the other peoples here do also, the newer corsair fans are nice and performce the same as noctua fans but you get 2 fans for the price of 1.

What I would do thou is to turn the fans around so the fans pull the air out of the case and tried it like that instead to get rid of hot air building up in the case, and perhaps going over the screws again and see if it sits loose over the cpu area

TanyaC I don't think your ears are fibbing, but the Lamptron may be doing so and I wonder if not with both the temps and RPMs. I don't know if you've read it or not but a review on the Lamptron speaks of some problems with the RPM readouts anyway (under the heading One Minor Quibble). If you go into it at boot, what does your BIOS say the temps are?

The noctua fans are just made in a very superior manner.
The materials used are specifically made to decrease noise.

My solution, put the noctua fans on the corsair radiator.
They may be ugly to look at , but they really are probably the best made computer fans on the planet.

My experience is the same as yours, TanyaC. I have a system with a Noctua NH-D14 and had another with a Corsair H100. The fans on the H 100 were unbearable. I changed the fans in every configuration possible. I go rid of the noise by using Noctua fans, but the H100 never kept my CPU as cool as the D14 did. I know a lot of others swear by the H100, but my experience is different. And if you go with the Noctuas, forget the Lamptron. Connect them to the PSU. You won't need a fan controller.

Hi all. The Noctua fans are 90mm fans, and don't fit the cooler. But I can always go and buy some 120mm fans.. They are only $29 AUD each.

I turned them around, so that they are blowing the hot air out the case through the radiator, as suggested. Temps are down 3 degrees celcius @ CPU 32c / M/B 30c.

All fans are on half speed, the H100 fans are set to the lowest setting. The noise is much better, but still not as quiet as it was before, so I'll go and pick up a couple of fans tomorrow.

@Wordsworth: When I quote temps I always quote from what the BIOS says. I typically don't rely on readings from third party programs, even the ASRock utility. The Lamptron is great for all other fan/temp readings. It wasn't really a surprise that the H100 couldn't be controlled. it has a Digital link controller, which of course, is sold separately, and can be used to manage the H100.

The only thing I don't like about this cooler is that when the system starts up or resumes from sleep it makes a noise like a jet plane taking off for about 30 - 40 seconds.

Scared the hell out of me at 4am this morning when my system woke up to do it's overnight maintenance

Just fyi. The reason it loads slowly for such a small program is because it has to grab all the data from the bios to work.

I'm using an H80 with my new i7 3770 build. I too had problems with the noisy OEM fans and have installed Nexus "Real Silent Case Fans". I can now use the new PC in my recording studio (what I built it for).

No Drama. Interestingly, the temps reported by the ASXTU are allways 3-4c lower than what the bios reports. Speedfan and coretemp also report pretty much the same as ASXTU.

So I go by the highest reported temp and work on lowering that

That's odd I have an asrock board and the temps have generally been dead on.
Then again your board is a generation above mine.

I have never used Real Silent Case Fans but looks like a good fan system if it works well in fireferd's recording studio. As you can see in My Specs I use Noctua fans all over my computer. No fan controller needed just run them 100% off the motherboard or power supply. The CPU pump is hook to the Cpu fan connection on the motherboard and runs at 1450 rpm all the time with no noise. The only thing I have noticed with my H50 is the idle/low load temps are always 23c above ambient (19c +23 = 42c) but under 100% load mid to high 60c is reached O/C to 4.1. Here is a little trick I use. The O.E. case fan on top with push/pull Noctua fans on top blow around and through my DSL modem and router keep them a lot cooler, 2c above ambient. Seem like the router and modem are the only 2 things people never cool.

My case is heavy on fans but the noise is fairly low.
The graphics card gets noticeable under load, but only because I've set it not to get above 65c.
This is amazingly accomplished without ever going above 70% on the fan though.

It is always better to use good quality aftermarket fans with a sealed waterblock

I have the Antec 620 Khuler it was running smooth when first set but temps started flexuating

I dumped the stock fans that Antec gave with the product and bought some mugen sythe slipstream fans my temps have been great ever since

Better off using the quality fans you already have then trusting the package product fans my experience with sealed blocks the fans they provide are not worth putting on IMHO they are just cheap fans with there logo on it that's all

That's not really an opinion, minus noctua I agree completely.
That's pretty much just how it is.
Noctua doesn't make much other than heatsinks and fans though.
Noctua.at - sound-optimised premium components "Designed in Austria"!

For those still looking for quality quiet fans I know the feeling. I like many others I would think did a lot of homework studying a lot of reviews and reading a lot of specs before paying the big bucks for Noctua fans. You can live without them but once you get them you will wonder why you did. The color grow on you in about a year. Because I bought mine through a local dealer I payed premium price of $28.00 apiece. They are worth it to me still today. You can buy them over the net cheaper.

Just for clarification, I have all the fans in my desktop, running at lowest speed (and still runs "cool"). I have the H80 set to lowest speed, and the three case fans in my Corsair Carbide 500R case at low speed (two in front and one on the side). My power supply is an Antec High Current Gamer HCG-620M Modular and it too is a "quiet fan" power supply.

RealTemp GT shows CPU temps mostly around 35C, under heavy recording use they will jump up to around 41C.

With the Noctua's run them wide open with no speed limitation and if possible run them off the PSU and not off the mobo to keep the voltage off the board.

Definately going to get the Noctuas. I have the fans turned down low, and system is still at 30C. And now I hear the Corsair fans rattling. I've never had a Noctua that rattles, so I'll be off the local shop agin in a few mins.

I can connect them to the Lamptron. That has it's own power from the PSU. The fans have a 3 pin connector, and I'd prefer not to be adding redundant molex connectors when I don't need to. The fewer cables the better is my motto.

Prior to upgrading case and cooler my system was at 34C and when encoding media it jumped to 63C. I haven't done any encoding since upgrading, I'll get to that in the next day or two and will revert with temps.

Interestingly, this upgrade was not orginally about cooling. It was that my Antec 900-2 case had too many design flaws that irritated me, most notably the drive cages.

If you are going to be using them for the rad, you may look at the Noctua NF-F12's rather than the NF-P12's. The F12's are 'focused flow fans' and will penetrate the rad better I believe, although the P12's do a good job.

Yes, I have purchased the F12's. Had a look online before I went out. They also have anti vibration pads, and a 200rpm higher max spin (which I hopefully won't need), and they were the same price as the P12's.
