Core i7 For Laptop?

I see they have the new core i7 series for laptops?

1. How many cores to they have?

2. Why are all the processors capped @ 1.6ghz?

They have "8" cores Though it's really 4 x 2 (Hyperthreading)

If they are really capped then it's probably so that they don't burn the battery down in 15 minutes or melt-down from excessive heat inside.

It is funny how there are tons and tons of i3 laptops and several i7 but i5's are somewhat scarce. i3 is the chip that is supposed to be used for things like laptopps but then there are people that want the best of the best and have to have an i7 (not realizing that it might as well not even have a battery if it was running at 3Ghz)

1. They have 4 cores. But Turbo Boost technology and Hyper-Threading enables them to run 8 processing threads.
2. The capping at 1.6GHz for laptops is probably a cooling and electricity supply issue. There are faster I7s though.

I have a Sony Vaio F series with an i7 720-QM processor. The speed is 1.6ghz, but it can has the Turbo boost technology that allows it to clock higher than that when needed up to a max of 2.8ghz. When unplugged and running on battery the processor speed can only get as high as 933mhz by design and cannot clock higher. Battery isn't great even though the processor down clocks itself, but the processor still performs well even at the 933 mhz and I can play Blu-Rays and do other tasks with ease still. Plugged in this thing can handle anything I want it to do. It runs warm and under load this thing gets loud too. My specs are: i7 720-QM, 6gb ram, Nvidia GT 330m Video 1gb, 500gb HD, Blu-Ray reader, 1920x1080 16.4" screen, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. The i7 also supports virtualization so I am able to run WinXP mode with Windows Virtual Machine and it runs quite well. The only thing I plan to upgrade it to put in an SSD and overall I am happy with this thing.

I have dropped the idea of having i7 CPU in my Dell notebook after hearing all kind of problems from the owners (heat, fan, power adaptor issues, etc...). Eventually, I went for an i5 CPU and I'm very happty with it. The Turbo boost gives a hand when needed for heavy applications and the Hyperthreading bring the 4 cores in action when I work with video material.

Battery life has to be really short with a i7 processor..

More of a desktop replacement than a Laptop.
