Solved Correcting an Activation mistake

I installed Windows 7 Pro successfully 6 months ago, and activated it with no issues. I have been running a 4 screen setup with Surround View successfully for years.

Recently, I upgraded my PCIe video card to an HD 6950 and after upgrading the CCC software, either I or the software lost the 2 onboard monitors.

I went thru numerous iterations of different drivers trying to get one that recognized onboard and PCIe as I had before. While doing this, I unintentionally un-installed my USB drivers, leaving me without mouse abilities.

After numerous iterations, I finally put my W7 Pro CD in thinking there was an Install/Repair option.

Long story short, the “upgrade” option got me back my 4 monitors, retained my existing software programs but left me with a message in the bottom right corner of 4 glorious monitors saying;

Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows in not genuine.


I am hoping to find a way to convince Microsoft this was a “noob” error and not malicious intent, but I am not taking any bets on that.

Can anyone give me some guidance as to how to rectify this short of buying another copy of W7 Pro?

You won't have to purchase anything - you simply need to activate your installation again. If you have already tried that, and it didn't work, then please do the following so we can see what the current situation is, and then take it from there:

1. Download and save this tool to your desktop:

2. Run the tool, and then click 'Copy' - ignore any errors if they appear

3. Use CTRL+V to paste the unedited results of the validation tool here in your next reply

I have two other questions, first and foremost is how do I accomplish crediting you for the swift assistance you have provided. I see in your signature where you request those who help be “REP”ed, but being a first time user, not sure what that entails but believe it means showing appreciation when we do get help.

Second, this system you helped me with has an almost “identical” twin. My daughter who has a business we use these computers in has the twin and I installed the HD 6950 video card in hers and she also lost her onboard monitors.

We have not attempted to use the original CD to "upgrade" her system but I assume it would yield the same results, and necessitate re-activating her OS.

Should I see if her system will be cleared up by “upgrading” with her CD and go thru the routine you have shown me or should I go to the video card section of this forum and ask for help?

Simply click on the 'jugement scale' in the appropriate post header - add a note in the box if you want.

There's no current problem with the second machine - if you need to, then yes, simply follow normal activation procedures. Most times it will go through on normal Internet activation, but it will request telephone activation if activated too often in order to check ownership.
