Corrupted dialog boxes in browsers

Hello
first time on here, so please bear with me.
Using Chrome primarily, the 'save as' dialog box has no text and just a few visible icons, which makes it almost unusable. I can select what i now know is the desktop icon and save there so that I can sort out what i have downloaded later.

Just tried to attach a screenshot file to this post but dialog boxes started flickering with no discernible text on them so unable to do so - this may be helpful in a diagnosis.

This happens in Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Also with IE, right-clicking brings up a largely blank dialog box. This has only just started to happen. I have not, to my knowledge, installed any programs recently and have no idea what is causing this, it's new to me.

Very grateful if someone could solve this for me, or at least point me in the right direction.

Rick

Hi Roy
thanks for your reply
sfc /scannow reported no problems
KB947821 wouldn't run on my computer - I am running 64-bit if that's why?

The text log, although possibly not relevant now, would not give me access.
I'm afraid I have no idea what the SURT is - overestimated my knowledge I'm afraid. There didn't seem to be any files with that in the title or similar - am i being dense?

So still have the problem I'm afraid, but your help much appreciated. Would a Windows update KB . . . etc etc similar to the one you suggested but for 64-bit be a) available and b) any use?

Thanks again

Rick

PS after trying the 'save as' dialog box again, I found that the aero part of my desktop themes had stopped working (make sense?). This had happened earlier today but hadn't connected them so wasn't sure it was relevant. I have to restart the Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager after running Services.msc. Hopefully this will mean more to you than me and may shed some light on the problem.

PPS I have found a 64-bit version of KB947821 so will try running all again and get back to you - should have looked before I posted.

Thanks again
