Solved Corrupted/Weird File ICONS

Today I had something very strange suddenly happen to almost all of my individual file icons in folder views (any program file type), no matter which folder view I choose. The only icons that display properly are folder icons, Desktop icons and system file icons.

I have made no changes to any icons or default programs, etc.

I did have a critical error when I booted out of hibernate this morning, and had to re-start the computer; however, I did not notice this problem until a few hours later. I also had new Windows critical updates that I installed prior to seeing this.

I have a full backup image from yesterday, but before I spend those 3 hours restoring, I wanted to see if anyone has some ideas to fix this problem.

I did see this tutorial:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

Below is a screenshot of what I'm seeing (little blue box with white double arrows):

Thanks everyone.

Ive run the tutorial (command prompt method), and system restore; neither has corrected the issue.

I'm reluctant to use system repair off the Win7 installation disk - as I've had issues with that method in Win XP Pro

So... are the files in C:\Users\username\.... actually shortcuts to files stored elsewhere?

Interesting, because all other files stored directly in folders that I created for other stuff on the HD do not have this problem; even files in C:\Program Files look right. I'm only seeing this in my libraries

hmmmm.

Thanks

That didn't work... sigh*

Do you use Norton 360 Backup ?
In Norton 360 backup there are icon overlays for the files that need to be backed up and have not yet been backed up. You can turn this feature off in Norton. It will take a reboot after you turn the feature off for your "normal" icons to return. Let me know if you need step-by-step instructions or if you figured it out.

Can you open these files/folders from these libraries (i.e. by double-clicking them)?

Not Norton 360 (although I do have it, I don't use the backup feature), but I used Norton Ghost 14 to restore my drive before my original post. I'm off to check this out...

Thanks!!

THAT! was it!!! Norton 360 had Backup Status Overlays turned on (I don't know why, I never set that, and have Backups disabled)

Turned it off, and Bingo!

AddRAM Rocks!!! Thanks so much!
