Counter Strike Source

i never once had any probs with it, Runs better then it did on vista. Faster load times and everything. Strange one this. but steam has been playing up for me the last few days so keep trying. :D
Same here. Never have any issues when loading CS. Try and reinstall Steam and then check if its working.

Hey there.

I also have problems with my CSS. Randomly while playing it just freezes and loops the current sound. I tried to use the compatibility mode for the shortcut to the game, but when I right click there is no option for "troubleshoot compatibility", and when I click "properties" there is no compatibility tab. If I use the "Program Compatibility troubleshooter" I found in the control panel, the shortcut to the game cant be chosen because it is not an .exe file. So I went to the game directory in "my computer" and I tried to use the HL2.exe icon with the compatibility mode. This didnt work though. I used the Windows XP Pack 2, but im not sure this is correct, I just found a video on youtube that told me to use that.

Well I hope you can help me with my problem, thanks anyways.

BTW, Im using W7 64Bit Home Premium....

I have the solution on installing Counter strike - condition zero..before you install it, Right click on the setup installer > troubleshoot compatibility > troubleshoot compatibility > choose the top choice > choose vista (service pack 2) > start program > click save setting just after the installation run..then close troubleshooter.. it really work for me..if this does not work, right click on the CS icon at the desktop > properties > compatibility > choose vista (service pack 2) > ok...I'm use windows 7 x64, ATI Radeon 5460, 6gbyte ram.. good luck...;)

Hi Franky and welcome to Seven Forums, It would be very helpful if you can fill out your system specs so we can help you better.

Most important would be the Graphics card you have and the amount of Graphics memory it has, don't get memory confused with Hard drive space which it sounds like you are doing.

Hidamnage1,

From what i can see is you are running a intergrated Intel graphics card which is sharing system memory. Even though it is telling you it as 358Mb of memory i think in your bios it could be set up as something far less like 64Mb or 128Mb maybe. You'd need to go in to your bios and find the setting for it to assign the recommend amount of 256Mb. I can't remember the exact setting for this but more or less every motherboard as this setting in the bios.

On another note, CSS does not like intergrated graphics cards at all. After the recent main update to it and the what some like to call the "Orange box engine update" then system requirements are quite a bit greater that are needed.

If you have a PCI-e graphics port on your motherboard then i would consider buying a new graphics card. Even an PCI one would do with more video memory on it but as said PCI-e would be preferable.

Anyway good luck with is and get back to us if you manage to sort something.

EDIT: Scratch that! From further looking in to your specs it looks to me like you are running on a laptop (Is this correct?) If so then no graphics card upgrade but there is still the option of checking your bios settings.

Oh and guy's. You really need to fill in your system specs as much as you possibly can so to gain the maximum amount of help :)

Anyone else having problems make sure to use compatibility mode on HL2.exe in your X:/Program Files/Valve/Steam/SteamApps/*Account Name*/counter-strike source/ folder. I personally use "Windows XP SP3", "Disable Visual Themes", "Disable Desktop Composition" and "Run this program as an administrator. I get problems with GameOverlayUI.exe not shutting down after i've played CSS but that's just a matter of going in to task manager to close the process. Also HL2.exe crashes after ever game shutdown but that's no biggy.

hey Taylorig,
thanks for the quick reply. yes its a laptop. but now the problem is how to change the BIOS settings? i checked on windows help, and restarted my computer but the BIOS settings seemed very difficult. plus the computer didnt even go on the BIOS settings option, it skips it and goes to the next option. plus windows warned tht BIOS settings is for advanced user, so i didnt want to mess around much with it.
wat do u suggest?

Anyone else having problems make sure to use compatibility mode on HL2.exe in your X:/Program Files/Valve/Steam/SteamApps/*Account Name*/counter-strike source/ folder.

There's really no need to run HL2.exe in compatibility mode. Half-Life 2 games run without issues under both Vista and Windows 7.

Most Half-Life 2/Source game issues can be attributed to hardware issues. Yes, software issues can occur as well, but they are mainly conflicts with other software and not Windows itself.

Also, from a Steam perspective, Valve does not recommend Steam be run in compatibility mode....

Note:

Please do not run Steam in compatibility mode.

Steam Support

Now, computers being computers, anything can happen.... but probability points more towards other issues rather than a compatibility issue with Half-Life 2/Source games under Vista or Windows 7.

In short Half-Life 2/Source games don’t need compatibility mode to work under Windows 7

Also, you might check this link for game launch options (steam) - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1040-JWMT-2947

You can also see my - Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues

Hope this helps.

@ damnage1 - if your PC doesn't meet minimum system requirements to run a game, and you can't change hardware, you could try running the game at the lowest possible settings, but if that doesn't work, you'll have to get a stronger system.

Sorry.

Yes i know what Valve say themselves about not running any Steam apps via compatibility mode sygnus21 but i for one take everything they say with a pinch of salt. After all looking through the Steam forums kind of backs this up.

But after that said i have had better results and not just on my PC but lots of friends by using this method. I fully understand it's not for everyone as is the case with many fixes due to so much hardware/software differences. I was just trying to give out a bit more help and i suppose there is no harm in trying, eh! :) It personally works out better for me and stops HL2.exe crashing at random times.

Anyway damnage1 if you're not to confident within your bios read your laptop manual or find it online to get a bit better knowledge. As long as you don't actually go changing anything before reading up on it you'll be fine. The bios is not that much of a scary place. It's actually very simple. Once you can get in of course. Usually it's a matter of tapping the Delete key or one of the Function keys on startup until the bios screen is displayed. Keep at it and you'll get there ;) Once you are in there look for something like "Dedicated video memory" or something like that. If you have 2Gb of system memory the recommended amout to use is 256Mb.

It's always good to have a different point of view. I was just pointing out some facts based on the info provided by those who created the program, the experiences of myself, and many others.

That said, I agree that with so much hardware/software differences there are tons of PC configurations that will have problems with Steam. But I must say it's probably more of a hardware/software conflict than a Vista/Windows 7 compatibility issue.

Anyways if your fix helps someone get the game running, that's a good thing ;)

Peace

Something awkward I've noticed before and just today is 2 HL2.exe's running when CSS is running. I started getting bad lag and my ping shot up. the way I can tell which one is which is the exe that is using more memory than the other one.. So I end process the exe that uses less memory. Once i did that my lag stopped and my FPS smoothed out.

Well, im not sure but i can run this fine for the first time. If i close normally and decide to play later i can't. I get "This game is currently unavaliable. Please try again later."

I have only been able to play the game once, didn't really work as i tried to load my autoexec and if you do it in game CS:S temp freezes and doesnt respond, and windows being clever thinks its died and auto-closes it. So thats the only time ive ever been able to play

any ideas?

This happens from Typing Quit in console. If you close the game by typing quit in console you lose all of your settings and it some times "Crashes" the game. Try to use the quit button and if that does not work and it still says Game not available just go into task manager and end Hl.exe, or hl2.exe

CSS problem

Hi,2 days ago i bought CSS.
I enter the game i play 1 round or 2, more or less and the screen turns black or gray. And a "crashed" sound is still runing, venry annoying. No other commands work like ctrl+alt+del. The mouse cursor is dissapearing and the keybord doesn't work either. I have to reset it manualy, by the button. I am a default user, i don't have cfg's and other things like that. I never played css before so any suggestions would help.
I have my video and directx11 updated. Another strange thing is that when i enter the video stress test, i get the same thing after 5 seconds.
Steam is installed correctly, i reinstalled css several times but no results. The same thing happends. I changed the css resolution but that didn't work either, my monitor's resolution is 1280x1024@75hz. I've set the game to run in windows compatibility mode with windows xp sp3, no result.
My cpu specs are : Intel E6500 dual core, Ati radeon hd 5750, 4gb ddr2, win 7 ultimate 64 bit. I never experienced any problems with other games before[2011 games work perfect]. I'm using Eset NOD32 antivirus.
No mods ...nothing, just a clean version of css.
Excuse the grammar please. What shall i do ???

You're video card might not be able to handle CSS there are some websites out there that will check to see if your video card can play the game before you buy it.
