now when i use 800 x 600 i get black strips up the side of the screen,

ive looked into this and found a few solutions with the flat panel scaling
although i dont have this in my nvidia control panel under display

i have the latest drivers for my card which is an 8600 GT

PLEASE HELP!!

When you are in video settings choose widescreen 16:10 (on the right side) click apply, and then choose resolution (on the left)...
Something like that...

You're on a wide screen monitor.. Running 4:3 ratio.. @ 800x600 resolution and complaining about black lines?

Only thing I could see is to run it 16:9

First of all, i see you didn't bother to fill in your computer specs so how do you expect people to help you solve your problems when we do not know which components you have.

Second, don't tell me you have a highr res monitor and you still insist on playing at such a low resoulution just because you heard that supposedly all the l33t kids play in that resolution?

Third, you should know that unless you actually have a really slow and old graphics card, when playing CSS at low resolutions, the game will rely more heavily on the CPU ( and may I remind you that CSS is still not optimised for multicore CPUs, so even though people have 2 or 4 core processors, the game only uses 1 core ) then on the graphics card. So if you have a good graphics card, playing in higher resolutions may actually give you better fps, not to mention that it will save your eyesight from looking at ugly pixelated images. LCD screens have a native resoultion, and the image is best at that resolution ( sharp, crisp and clear ) , if you lower the resolution from this native one, the image quality and sharpness will suffer the lower the resolution especially if it is stretched across the whole screen, the image becomes blurry.

This is where the black bars come into play.
Rather than stretching the low res image across the whole screen, it shows the image in its native resolution by covering the rest of the screen with black bars, thus everything still stays perfectly sharp and clear. This is practically the same as playing the game at that lower resolution but in windowed mode, only in windowed mode you also see the rest of windows interface around the game window, whereas with black bars you only see the game.
