What are the low & high temps that an AMD FX 4100 CPU should run between? And please list in Fahrenheit; I don't get why everyone always talks in Celsius, we get a finer resolution of ambient temperatures when using Fahrenheit.

Generally, every desktop CPU that exceeds 158 degrees Fahrenheit while stressed is considered unsafe and in need of fan and heatsink dedusting.

I'm using the stock fan & not doing much of anything when my computer freezes on me. I thought the CPU may be overheating, but whenever I have to reboot due to a computer freeze, I go into the BIOS & my CPU temp. is awlays between 105-115 degrees Fahrenheit. Doesn't look as though that is the problem.

Damn, I can't nail down this freezing problem!

Computer Lockups have a lot of issues that can cause them.

Viruses, Bad Hard Drives, Bad Memory, Corrupted OS files, Heat, etc... Do you notice the lockup happening specifically when you do a certain task, or is it random?

For the monitoring of temperatures for your hardware:

• CoreTemp
• CPUID HWMonitor

You could also try running a full scan with the AV suite you have installed, and also some other programs such as:

• Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
• Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller

I rebuilt my computer &, after a few minor hardware hickups (nothing too serious), I installed 7 Pro 64Bit w/SP1 last week. During OS installation, this happened a few times:
The computer would freeze, just freeze w/o any warning messages/anything to let me know it was about to happen. This would happen when I was on the final portion of OS installation/after OS completed installation & while updates were on their last leg of installation. I had to restart the whole OS & updates installs each time, but now everything is finally installed.

The next day I tried to update my System Rating & the computer froze up. I rebooted & installed Avast! Internet Security; did another reboot (as Avast! asked) & tried to update my System Rating again ... computer froze.

In both instances though, it froze in different places: the 1st during either Direct3D Texture Load/Direct3D ALU & the 2nd during either CPU/Disk Performance. I tried again yesturday & again computer froze, this time during Windows Media Playback. I can't pin down the probelm, this is frustrating.

Forgot to mention, I can't install Flash. Computer freezes before installaton even starts, whether I have it just Run from the web/save it for later installation.

Have you ran any of the anti-virus and anti-rootkit scans which I suggested in post #6?

What were these minor hardware problems?

Like x BlueRobot said, try to scan your computer with Avast! or other A/V software. If you have problem when you scan computer try this method :

If you don't have any virus, I will test your RAM with Memtest86+. Maybe you have bad RAM memory and that can cause freezing.

Note : that can work too long, so run it over night.

If that don't help, we will try to find other way to fix it

For virus scanning, I would recommend installing and updating Malwarebytes, then booting your computer into safe mode, F8 at boot up, then run a full scan and let it remove any infections.

Earlier today I ran Windows Defender Offline ... No problems found.
Then I ran MemTest86+ ... no problems found.

Something went haywire b/c Windows would not boot-up at all, so I decided to do a complete reinstall from scratch. This time everything went nice & smooth, no hickups whatsoever & all updates went through w/o any problems as well. All seems fine now except I still cannot update my System Rating, the computer freezes during 'Windows Media Playback'.

Are your video card driver up to date, and did you grab the Windows Media Player updates, some of them have to be received by opening Windows Media player and choosing the check for update in the menu. If not mistaken it updates Media Codecs that way.

I looked in Device Manager & I don't have the latest driver for my card (Radeon HD 6670) but when I checked AMD's website, both AutoDetect & Manual want me to install Catalyst. I don't want Catalyst, just the main driver; how do I get this?

Also, Can I check for Media Player updates w/o having to actually open/use the program?

for the media player updates you have to open media player, as for the drivers, you can install catalyst, and just stop it's startup process so it doesn't load with windows.
