Hi everyone.
I have a HP Compaq NC4400 which has a Core 2 Duo T5600 CPU (very slow, 1.83 GHz and tiny 2MB cache) and I'm looking forward to upgrades.
The laptop has Socket M and supports mostly early Merom-era CPUs and uses a 667Mhz FSB with the Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset.
My question is, what CPUs work with it?
The CPUs I already own are mostly Penryn, with those being:

-Core 2 Duo T7250 (2GHz - 2MB)
-Core 2 Duo T7500 (2,2GHz - 4MB)
-Core 2 Duo T7700 (2,4GHz - 4MB)
-Core 2 Duo T9300 (2,5GHz - 6MB)

My goals are:
-Get the maximum possible Cache size.
-Get the maximum possible Clock Speed (preferrably 2.2 GHz and above).
-Acceptable gaming/desktop performance on CPU-heavy games of the era or older.
-Thermals must continue not to be ridiculous, this is an Ultra-portable Sub-notebook we're talking about!

Until I get some Ideas, i won't try the CPUs I have yet because i really dont want to damage any of those CPUs and of course the laptop itself.

From what i found the fastest CPUs in the socket M family are:

-Core 2 Duo T7200 (2GHz - 4MB)
- Core 2 Duo T7400 (2,17 GHZ - 4MB)
-Core 2 Duo T7600 (2,3GHz-4MB)

Yes I know their differences are miniscule.
The best chip I could find is from a lot CPU bundle, in a local Auction site, a T7400, but the bundle costs 25 Euros, the seller is hesitant to sell them separately and I'm not really willing spending 25 Euros for a bunch of Pentiums and Athlons just because ONE of them is a CPU I know works.

What I am willing to do is make this lovely machine more usable without the risk of any Physical Damage.

I have heard of a mod for Socket M which Tricks CPUs requiring 800MHz FSB run on lower-clocked FSBs, I'd like get more info on that...

Also I'd like to know if there's any BIOS mods for the NC4400, as HP might have set whitelists and from what i know, Socket P and M are identical, if I am wrong correct me, if I'm correct then the mod should be possible software-wise, again with BIOS modifications (if any).

You might want to read this. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Processor-update/td-p/5802432 Getting a computer to run beyond it's specs is dangerous. A bios update can literally brick a computer if not done right and you want to mod it?

You didn't mention memory. The max is 4 gb. If you have any less in there I'd update that first and see how you like it, especially if you have vista or later installed.
The Laptop currently has 3GB. Maxing it out is just adding a 2GB stick, I have a ton of those. Also all my systems are on 4GB RAM, Both Desktop and current Laptop. It's enough for me.
About the OS, Il probably use Windows 7 but i might give Vista a try.
Also, if I try a Socket P CPU nothing catastrophic will happen, the machine will just not boot or be unstable at worst...

And thanks for the article. The C2D T7400 100% works with this laptop, since it even came with it from the factory in some units.

In my personal (Dell-related) laptop, desktop, and tower computer experience, with different OSs, the biggest bang for the buck is
1) Installing maximum RAM,
2) Installing an SSD, replacing a much slower HDD,
3) Installing a CPU of significantly greater speed/capacity
4) Add a discrete Graphics (Gfx) card. This may be optional depending on computer and applications being run. A decent Gfx card will take some load off the rest of system components.

Depending on what you already have, the order of suggestions will change. Laptops are significantly more difficult to work on than other types of computers. A decent computer tool kit is less than $30, and worth every penny, especially when working on laptops.
Gift your replaced parts to your local computer person as a gesture of good will. They may be able to use them and know how to recycle them. If you need their help, they will remember you.

Except for one early Dell Optiplex desktop (with soldered-in CPU), I was able to replace CPUs and all the other stuff fairly easily. Some of the updated elderly computers are not too far off some specs for modern "lower-end" computers.

It's important to consider Heat input to your computer, especially laptops and some desktops with limited cooling solutions. Computers hate heat, and excess heat will cause CPU to self-throttle, slowing everything down.

When upgrading CPUs on computers, I first look at the TDP (number representing Thermal Design Power) for the existing CPU, then compare it with available alternative CPUs. Many computers allow substitution of CPUs with same or different TDP using same heat dispersal mechanism. I always use a replacement/upgrade CPU with TDP very similar to existing CPU. This called "Playing it safe". Other folks have used compatible CPUs with significantly higher TDP, but long-term reports are scarce for some reason, LOL. When working on any computer, take the time/opportunity to clean out the passages of the cooling system, using brushes and compressed air to blow-out all contaminants in the direction of the air flow. You may be surprised at how much air-blocking crud was hidden.

To sum, yes, it's possible to safely upgrade some elderly computers, but unlikely most of them will meet Win 11 requirements. Recent events have driven up price of RAM and SSDs to a point where upgrading is far more costly than it used to be. That's why I'm experimenting with a highly upgraded Dell E6420 "Business-Grade" laptop with Linux Mint.
