Cpu is running 100 cannot get it down.

Hi I am helping my friend wit her windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1 64 bit with 8 gigs memory.

Her computer is running slow and it runs hot. The cpu jumps all over the place put pretty much runs 100%. I have tried getting it down by lowering power percentage and running virus scans such as malwarebytes and adwcleaner and Ccleaner.

I would appreciate help in this matter. I am doing updates right now.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
It's been pretty popular topic forever it seems,
Most common cause is svchost.exe churning away at resources

Switch windows update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine


Then go here and download and manually install this update which is kb3161608
Win-7 32bit

Restart when prompted too
Once you do switch the update settings to Check for updates but let me choose.....
Then manually check for updates.

Did the cpu drop once you switched to never check for updates and restarted ?

Which security do you have installed ?
Uncheck the box to Active Free trial from the final install options,
Go to Scan/ Custom scan/ Configure scan and on the left column check the box to scan for Rootkits

Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium

Click Start and type in the search box
resource monitor
Click on the suggestion on the top.
Go to the Overview section on the top left

I do not have a snipit tool on 7 how do I take the snap shot? Also Google updater was on auto in services and I set it to mauel that helped but still cpu is still high or jumps.

Okay I am sorry let me clear this up for you. It did not have firefox until last night I downloaded it. It was doing the same with google which was very slow and took up allot of memory as well. When I first turn on the computer the cpu goes up and down with nothing running. so it is a bit of a bug a boo. Firefox only had one tab open. And yes that is correct Never check for updates selected and after restarting the machine ?

Ouch one tab open :shock:
Chrome is expected to use a lot of resources
Firefox and Palemoon which I use the later I had 3 tabs open with 357mb used a lot less than Firefox and 1 tab you show :/

Now I shut down and restarted the computer with nothing running. It shows cpu high 100 that is with nothing. It does not make sense. Also is is slow to start up period.

Hi,
Do you have windows defender turned off ?
Go to Control panel and click on the windows defender listing and see if not turn it off you use Avast.

Okay I will do that. Right now I thought I will run Malarebytes custom scan in safe mode to see if there is a virus hiding. In custom I did what you said above and checkd rookit in custom scan. do you not want me to fix anything until you have a look see?

Yes well that is very strange. It wont let me get into it for some reason. It just says it is off. Virus scan came back with nothing. so hummm
