Crash Too

The same thing just started happening to me. I have no trouble going to other Websites but trying to start Windows Update causes the same error as you're getting. I also tried resetting IE8 and SFC /SCANNOW and neither helped.

Have you recently installed Java ?

The same problem happened to me this morning so I restored the system before the installation of Java and my computer works fine now. (I couldn't uninstall because explorer was crashing just like windows update)

I noticed last night that Windows 7 Beta was crashing for me when I tried to open Windows Update.

I've just uninstalled Java, and Windows Update opened fine.

EDIT: Windows Installer was then playing up, so I went back with System Restore, and reinstalled Java because I need it. Windows Update seems to be working.

Thanks to those who suggested System Restore. I didn't have Java loaded but a Restore fixed my problem. I then cautiously reinstalled the programs I had installed after the Restore point one at a time and tested Windows Update after each install. Nothing affected Windows Update! I'm pretty sure I reinstalled all the software I had loaded. Oh well, this *is* just a beta so I'm not upset. It's still more stable than either the XP or Vista betas were!

Windows Update is crashing Windows Explorer for me as well :(

Seems as if this is a widespread problem, as every Windows 7 forum I am subscribed to has people mentioning this problem

hym wonder what it could be. I did a total reinstall. installed all my stuff the way I liked it and made a hidden back up partition with the Windows 7 Partition on it. So if anything like that happens again I can just delete my windows 7 and copy the backup onto it. and doing system restore and backing up files.

Well it kinda figures that if it is a problem with a specific update, then the problem would start popping up from the point that update is started to be downloaded by users

Seems we have a solution here: SQM Client Causing Crashing in Windows 7 at Chris123NT’s Blog

1. Delete the string values (Except for (Default)) in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
2. Start gpedit.msc
3. Expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, expand Internet Communication Management, and then click Internet Communication settings.
4. In the details pane, double-click Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program, and then click Enabled.

The problem comes from the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions\MachineThrottling
Deleting or renaming it solves the problem. Turning off WCEIP apparently prevents the problem to happen again.

Slow!!
I am running the Official Release of Windows 7 Beta build 7000 X64. I have done no "hacking" or "Tweaking" to date on this. Wanted to run it as intended and see how stable it was. I have been checking for updates daily and performing them as needed.

I experienced the same thing as described here today. Could not do any updates. Wouldn't even open that page.... So it wasn't any hacks or tweaks on my end, and it was with X64 for me, no x86. I did do the Send Feedback and also the Report an issue and described my problem. If anyone pays attention to those on MSofts end, then they got my info.

Hope this helps. I will try the fix described here when I have a moment and report back.
