Hi there, Does anybody know of a free W7 64-bit program to compress multiple files/folders into individual zip files? I am running 7-Zip as my default system archive program and I don't want to change it but it doesn't seem to do multiple archiving outside of a command prompt. I tried MyZippa but if it's W7 64-bit compatible I couldn't get it to work. 7-Zip can't open the created zip files. I get 'cannot open file as archive' error. Cheers for any suggestions.

You could use Winrar. It puts files you want into achives in a .RAR format and also opens Zip files and other formats. Most people use Winrar aswell.

Thanks ishmael9100, Unfortunately, I don't want rar files I want zip, Winrar isn't free and I'm more than happy with 7-zip (except for multiple archive lol) which I think is better than Winrar. But I actually found Peazip which does create multiple archives in a variety of formats and it's really fast which is great. It also comes in a portable version (and I love portable apps) so I don't need to install another archive program just to use it for multiple archiving. Cheers for the suggestion though.

According to Comparison of file archivers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 7-zip supposedly supports multi-volume archiving.

However, according to SourceForge.net: 7-Zip: Topic: command line and updating a volume set, Igor says that once you've made the multi-volume archive you cannot update it.

All the research I have seen as well seems to point to commandline only use, however it is odd that the Wiki does not make note of this at all.

You do have another option - IZArc Free Zip File Archiver | Free Software Full Version

And WinRAR does both .RAR and .ZIP formats, and it integrates into your system very well (and even 64bit OSs now too).

The best part is that the license I bought in 2002 is still good today - a one time payment (then only $20) has lasted me this long, and it is the main reason I keep it around.

However, it's performance is getting out of date - other archivers get better performance *and* better cost less, so...

The choice is yours.

Right click on the file you want to Zip, then click on Send To, Then select "Compressed Zip Folder"
