You can create a template to use for each document you create. Because each document will have three unique sets of data, you need to use placeholders. Word provides three choices for page x of y. However, a fourth option can be custom configured. Word will automatically enter the page numbers for you. The other data (file name and path and date file was created) would have to be entered manually when creating the document. Each new page will automatically include the manually entered data. It is not real obvious how to do this. I had to play with it for about fifteen minutes to figure it out.

The steps to set up the footer template include:

  1. configure the footer
  2. save as a template
The steps to use the template include:

  1. create new document from template
  2. enter data for file name and path and date file was created
  3. escape the header that is automatically created.
  4. type your document
I can walk you through the steps if you will tell me which of the following options you want to use for the footer.

horizontal:
file name and path [spaces placed here] date file was created [spaces placed here] page x of y

vertical left justified:
file name and path
date file was created
page x of y

vertical centered:
file name and path
date file was created
page x of y

vertical right justified:
file name and path
date file was created
page x of y

I am sure that there is a way to script a macro for this, but that is way above my pay grade.

Anyway reply back with the option you would like to use, and I will walk you through it. It may take more than one post to make sure that everything works like you want it to. If you have the patience, I do too.

Neutron16,

Thanks for the heads-up on the field codes. I was unaware of that method. The method I discovered by tinkering was to modify the page numbering option found on the ribbon Insert tab. I bet there are quite a few of the things I have found by tinkering that have other built in methods I have not discovered.

I guess it goes without saying that the field codes can be saved in a template also judging by the description in the links you provided.

Thanks again,
drpepper

BTW- I don't want to hijack the OP. I don't know exactly how things work under the hood of the forum. Does adding a rep mark the thread as solved?

I keyed in on the words permanent and new. This will take a custom template. You have to create and save the template yourself. This gives it a reusable (permanent) nature. When creating a new document, you create it from the saved template.

to create a template:

  • open a new document in the normal way
  • create your footer, and test print it (NOTE: select the page numbering style from the ribbon [insert tab>page number])
  • edit if necessary, and test print again until you have the desired results
  • click file, then save as
  • give it a descriptive name you will recognize like name-date-page footer in the file name box
  • click the down arrow on the right side of the save as type box
  • from the drop down menu, select Word Template (*.dotx)
  • click save
to create a new document using the template:

  • open a new document in the normal way
  • click file, then new
  • in the window which opens click My Templates
  • Select the template with the name you gave it with the instructions above
  • in the create new box at the lower right select document, and click OK
  • type your document
  • save in the normal way, using the extension of your choice (.doc, .docx., etc.) Do not save the document as a template, or the document will become another template.
PLEASE NOTE: If you use my method, you will have to manually enter the file name, path, and date for the first page. All subsequent pages will take duplicate this data. The page of page will automatically adjust its self with the addition of each new page.
