Create remote hostname for SSH?

Hi I'm fairly new to using SSH and I'm trying to use it via cygwin. I've only been able to connect locally so I was wondering how to make a hostname such as [email protected] so I can connect remotely from anywhere I want. Do I need to pay for a domain to route traffic or can i make my own locally that can be accessed anywhere?

Hello,

The easiest and probably safest way of doing this would be to remote onto your PC with a program like logmein free.

You could port forward SSH on the router to your local PC and then setup a DynDNS account but its alot more work. Plus leaving SSH open can be a security concern as it can be brute forced.

You would have to actually buy a domain name, for example through godaddy.com and then map that to your home IP address.

Honestly I would just write down your IP address in your phone (to remember it) and use that to connect to your home PC via SSH. On a side note, make sure you have a very long password that contains letter, numbers, and special characters. Also, try running SSH on some port other than 22. Those two precautions will enhance your security a great deal.

Just depends, my ISP issues dynamic IP's but I never power off my modem so I don't lose it. And yes, you'll need to forward the port on your router. I understand your stance about using a different program instead of RDP.. I personally use RDP so I don't have to install a third party program on every PC I use to remote into my computer. Other than RDP, my recommendation would be VNC.
