Create System Image - folder permissions/security

I just did another fresh W7 install to be able to create a System Image. The creation of this went fine.

I decided to look into the folder tree for WindowsImageBackup. I had to click CONTINUE when prompted that I did not have permission to view the folders.

Now, when I go to restore, it says there are no System Images to restore from. I assume this is occurring because I clicked CONTINUE on the UAC control that tried preventing me from looking at those folders. So, what do I do to restore the permissions to the way they were??

I have done NOTHING with that folder (in the root of the drive) other than simply VIEW the folder tree (and by proxy, having to click CONTINUE to get administrator rights to it).

I need to know what sharing rights to (likely) RELINQUISH. I'm guessing that Windows will only look for that folder if it's "system-owned" or something.

Hang on. I'm reviewing the System Restore pages here on 7forums and I think I may be confused as to how this all works.

I see my problem. When trying to do a System Image Restore via Control Panel, I get a message that windows couldn't find any FILE backups. This seems to be a preventive to let you backup your files PRIOR to the image restore process occurring. I was under the impression that RIGHT from THAT restore screen, you'd see your WindowsImageBackup folders with the timestamps to select one to restore from.

User error.

Here's the solve

I ran into the same problem, tried various things, what ended up working for me was using a Acronis boot disk, (acronis true image 2014), and restoring the vhd's inside the backup folder, the small ESP one and the long named big one, each as its own partition, unchecking recover MBR's. Hope this helps anyone who was searching for an answer.

So giving yourself permission to view the WindowsImageBackup folder was actually unrelated to any problem you had in restoring?

I need to know because I, too, got curious and granted myself permission to look. Don't want to find out that having done so will break the restore when the time comes.

Hard disk is encrypted. In addition to above motherboard info from Speccy, CPU-Z reports: "Model: HP 194E, KBC Vers. 91.0D; Chipset: AMD 15 IMC, Ver. 00; Southbridge: AMD A76M FCH, Rev. 2.6; LPCIO: SMSC"
so yeah

Short answer= make a new image

The only thing that could have broken it was giving myself permission by clicking yes, it both took ownership and added me to the ACL. This didn't make the .vhd unusable, just made it so windows repair disc couldn't see the image. Hope this helps.
