I installed service pack 1 and a few other updates last night on my dad's work computer. I think the computer somehow managed to power off last night before completing the update even though it was plugged in.

Now the computer can not boot windows because it get's stuck around update 300 and receives a fatal error.

I am trying to do system restore however I can't access it due to an administrator password on the laptop. I talked to their IT person and I still can't get the password to work.

My dad never made a recovery disk like I asked and doesn't have the Windows 7 Pro 32 bit disk so I can't access it that way. I only have a 7 Pro 64 bit disk and a 7 Home Premium 32/64 disk.

What other ways can I go about fixing the problem? It's critical it is fixed within the next 12-16 hours.

Check the laptop manafacturer to see if this is an issue they might have a fix for. My mothers Dell with Win XP will not accept SP2 or SP3, can't remember which, so we have to manually keep her PC updated minus the SP. If we install the SP her machine slows to a non workable crawl and of course there is no documentation on Dell's site about it. These machines are built for the specific OS installed when you get it and SP and future OS's are really a crap shoot as to whether they will work at all.

Build a PC and you should never have this issue.

The computer can't even run Windows at the moment. The windows logo appears and then it says fatal error around 300 something out of 27,000.
It runs windows 7 and is compatible with service pack1. The problem is that it shut off some reason while updating and Is why I need a way to do system restore.

Try this first.
Boot into Safe Mode before Windows starts loading. F8 on many computers. Try a System Restore before update.

Their may be other options but this may get you working again.
Let us know if this works or if further help is needed.

Take a look here before trying install of SP1 again.

Mike

I've already tried f8 but when I get to the system restore screen I have to enter the administrator password which currently I don't know what it is. I got a password from his companies IT manager but it didn't work.

I'll take a look at your link. Thanks for taking time to help me out on this.
