sfc /scannow produces "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"

aaron stebners .net framework verification tool does have any problems until netfx40testapplication produces exit code -2146232576

turn windows features on or off produces an empty window.

system update readiness tool produces 1 error "csi unable to query store version"
log files attached

latest virus scan found 1 corrupted file:

Britton30, do you have any other ideas? using my windows 7 upgrade dvd, i get the following:

the upgrade was cancelled.

setup cant continue. restart the computer and restart setup. when prompted, try getting the latest updates.

but i selected updates.

You could also try the Repair install by making your own installer, start at # 5.

but i am attempting to download the windows 7 install. currently heidoc is experiencing problems with broken links.

disk image from heidoc, did not work, same result as install disk.

system restore did not work, probably because oldest restore point does not go far enough back.

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Also please upload the entire C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder (compressed) - the data may give us a handle on what's happening.

From the looks of the event logs, you've been having a few problems for over a year - including your Apple apps, and .NET


I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

You seem to have uploaded the wrong file - I got the COMPONENTS.LOG file (type LOG) rather than the COMPONENTS (type File) file (which should be around 40MB uncompressed.

As far as I can see, the COMPONENTS hive is massively corrupted - to the point where there's no way that I can attempt to fix it.

Since you appear to have no restore points early enough to contain the uncorrupted hive, there is no alternative to a repair install - if even that works. If it fails, then a clean install is your only real option.

several attempts to repair install, all end in upgrade being cancelled "try getting the latest updates".

currently reluctant to do a clean install.

This *may* be because of the type of corruption present in the hive.
I have no idea if this will work, or make things worse - so it has to be your choice whether to follow these instructions or not.

1) reboot to Safe Mode
2) in Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\config folder
3) rename the COMPONENTS file to COMPONENTS.backup
4) close Windows Explorer and reboot to normal mode
5) try a repair install now.

windows rebuilt components file, now 256k

currently downloading sp1. i wonder if this will be the latest updates that might help repair install finish.

Simply installing SP1 will not work - it relies on too many things in the COMPONENTS hive.

If the repair install is still failing, the chances are that you have no option except a clean install.
