Most Touchpads has a switch on top of it to disable / enable it. You may be disabling it while you use it.

My desktop system does that rarely. I use a wireless mouse and I think the wireless connex gets messed up somehow. I just power cycle the mouse and it clears it. Not really your particular situation but I thought I'd mentioned it.

Thank you chefduane for the suggestion. I used a wireless mouse so I could use the notebook until I found How To rectify the cursor freeze problem.
