Custom Built Rig - FreshTech Gaming Computer - Amd Redeon HD 7700

Hello,

I got a brand new custom built computer only 3 weeks ago, but the graphics card included: amd radeon HD 7700 stopped responding every so often. However today, the screen froze and multiple artifacts appeared across the screen. I then turned the computer off so as not to cause any damage that may occur.

The computer specs are as follows:

Power Supply : 500 Watt With Power Cable Supplied
Motherboard : Asus M5A78L-M USB3
CPU : AMD Piledriver FX 4350 4.2Ghz Quad Core CPU (turbo 4.3Ghz)
Hard Drive : 500gb Sata Hard Drive
Memory : 4gb DDR3 1600mhz Branded Memory
Graphics Card : ATI 7750 2gb ddr3 (Tripple screen support via DVI / HDMI / DISPLAY PORT)
Optical Drive : 24x Dual Layer DVD Writer

Has anyone got any ideas for what I should do. This happened to my old computer and I left it to the point where the card blew completely.

What kind of PSU are you using can you find the make and model

Could be a number of issues but the PSU is the first guess if it is cheap then it probably is that

If not the PSU next step is to try the card in a different machine if it works fine then it would be a problem with your new set up either bad drivers not enough power to the card or a bad PCI-e slot or even a bad card

A bad card would render a TDR Timeout Detection Recovery if they driver crashes multiple times and this is what you get either over clocking can help or t he card simply is broken

The HD 7 series had many problems t hat gave it what you are referring too try to overclock the 2d settings and see if it goes away


BTW you mentioned artifacts the card might be broken already

I have a 500w PSU, which is a XFX Pro series. Also the artifacts only appears for a split second when the screen froze, however after it recovered the artifacts where no longer there and there is still no trace of them when I turned the computer on again. (Sorry for any typos, I am writing with on my tablet)

OP, no error messages AT ALL? PC recovers eventually from every freeze? How long a freeze are we talking about?

Overclocking a video card is suggested for this issue? Yikes, that seems like a major design flaw then.

I'd do the Memtest+ boot disc RAM testing after reseating the RAM to eliminate that as culprit.

I have a pair of 7770's running CrossFire. If I go to far with my overclock I get the same message. I would set gpu and mem to default values and confirm a stable system before any attempt at overclocking the gpu. Download GPU Shark so you can monitor the GPU temps and fan speed. You can overheat these 7000 series gpu's.

I'll looking to GPU Shark. At the moment I am now on my computer, I have so far downloaded CCleaner and fixed all the problems in the Registry. Also there was a program that changed the max voltage level to all the components in the computer depending in which mode you were in (EPU-4 Engine) and I have just found out that there is a new driver software update, which I am in the process of downloading (slow internet, 2 - 100 KBps)

So will any of the above actions fix the problem?

EPU-4 Engine is "OLD" ASUS software and I'm surprised it even runs on your Dell. Personally I would remove it. The newest 7300le driver I could find for 7X32 is 306.97, dated 01-07-13.

Have you installed the 306.97 gpu driver? You may need to use a earlier version to run well on your older Dell. The Dell's tend to be a bit proprietary.

Whoops. Sorry madcratebuilder. That was my old computer specs, I completely forgot to update them. The card I have got is a ATI Radeon HD 7750.

Voltage being adjusted could easily have wrecked havoc on your system, yes, if you escape without permanent damage, extremely fortunate, I would say.

Hopefully. I got in contact with the people who built and will replace it if the card is malfunctioning. However no signs that it is broke. So alls good.

Nope. No such luck. Same thing happened, while I was playing a game the screen froze and clusters of small red dots appeared across the screen. However it recovered and the artifacts disappear. What does this mean, does it mean it's about to fail or it's simply just broke?

3 posts in one go? What is this madness. Anywho, after doing a bit of rooting around in the depths of google. I came across a thread on this forum that proclaimed a solution, with this card in mind. It also matches what I have been doing; it claims that letting your computer turn of the display is not supported by the card and is causing the card to stop responding during the session in which the screen turned off. After reflecting, every time my computer did turn the screen off. Shortly after, if I was doing something demanding the card crashed and then recovered.

Edit: After doing more research into the matter, some people are claiming that windows, when it turns the screen off, cuts out too much power. So the card does not have enough power to operate.

However, I highly doubt that this could be the case. Does anyone know if this could be true? As I would rather not have to go though all the fuss of sending the card back and getting a new one.

What is turning the monitor off? A screen saver, sleep or hibernation mode? As I previously said I have two 7700's and I do not have any problems like this went recovering from screen saver or sleep mode.

What are the gpu temps when the gpu crashes? What is your gpu fan profile? Try cranking up the fan speed. You want full fan rpm by 60*C. MSI's "After Burner" program is great for working with the HD7700's.

Problem still exists. I have contacted the company who built it and I will be sending the card to them, however at the moment I can send it to them until 2 weeks. As I am going on a short holiday, so as to prevent anymore damage to the card. I went into the Bios to switch to the onboard graphics, however this seemed quite stupid due to the fact that I am use to Dell motherboards and their bios. So I don't know what I am doing, does anyone how to switch the primary graphics card with the motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M

Also the idle temp of the graphics card is 47C, while gaming it peaks up to 60C. While the fan speed is only at 37% all the time.
