I'm sure this is another one of those things that's simple when you know how, but ...

Say you have a folder that contains several hundred photos. You select them all, press F2, re-name, and voila: the whole lot are re-named using the format 'Photo (1)' etc. My question is: is there any other ( reasonably straightforward ) way to control the numbering format? For example, what if I wanted the photos to be named 'Photo 001' etc.?

I feel like this is something I've come across somewhere before, but can't remember the procedure, if so. Ideally I was hoping there would be a way to do this without going into registry commands etc., and ideally without using third-party software. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'm thinking that's an internal mechanism of the ren and rename commands that go back ages.

So, in light of that it would appear you need to use a third-party program to accomplish what you want.

Check out the following:

Bulk Rename Utility would work for that.
Download - Bulk Rename Utility

This somewhat complicated so read the help files under "All Renaming Options"

For me personally, I use ReNamer Lite (really great piece of software and saved my sanity trying to use the findstr command as well as others), Text Merge, Analog X Extension Changer, and TXTCollector. GSplit3 has some great possibilities too. I've used GSplit3 to split large IP address logs and whatnot and every 7,000th line or what ever. Now converting from CIDR to range is a lot easier where large files will take a very long time to parse.

Bulk Rename Utility looks pretty damn slick as well. Downloaded.
