I'm confused. Are you trying to add sounds to Windows 7 or Windows 10?

For Windows 7, the .wav files MUST be in the Windows Media folder. "C:\Windows\Media". And you will most likely need to take ownership of the folder to make changes.

You might also have an Aero Theme interfering with sound selection. Review your theme.

Use Option One of this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/285-sounds-change.html

After you have selected the sound to play for the event, can you press the Test button and hear the sound play?

Silly but are you pressing the Apply button?

Update:
Oh, yes. I did find out that the sounds you select can be located anywhere. They don't need to be in the Media folder. That's simply where all the defaults are installed. I tried various changes and they took just fine. Sorry for the misinformation. It's been a while since I changed sounds. :o

If you're getting any sounds from your system, I suspect your audio is working.

Can you double-click on your .wav file and play it through Windows Media Player?
Are you using some custom media player?

After a reboot, does your custom sound selection still show as the current selection?

I'm not familiar with "Smoothie firewall" as an AV but have you tried disabling it for a test?

i play it using VLC media player the best one out there. i will try and play it with WMP

yes when i reboot the sound selection is still there.

I do not have a smoothie firewall anymore. i will update my info its an open source firewall you can install on a old desktop pc for free. and no built in firewall should stop a sound file form playing unless the AV or firewall deems it infected in which case it is not. its just so weird that i have had 2 different builds with pc and i got the same result freakin Windows crap
