My main computer decided to breakdown yesterday. It turns on but gives one long beep and two short beeps, which from what I can tell is the RAM? Anyway, is there any way to transfer the data stored on my main computer to my backup computer now it's not booting properly, maybe via USB leads?

If its not booting then you will have to take the drive out get a usb enclosure put it in that plugged into the other pc. The you will have a problem that you wont have right to the files as the belong to the user on the other pc even if the name is the same the SID wont be so you will need to tak ownership.

Have you removed ram cleaned it and see if it then works failing that buy new ram

Thanks for the info. Yeah, from what I can understand from other sites dusty RAM can cause problems and thanks for verifying it. It does actually have a serious problem with dust where my computer is, so I think you might have hit the nail right on the head. I'll have to check before I start replacing things.

1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps is a memory issue.

Unplug the PS cable from the wall outlet. If it's a laptop, also remove the battery.
Remove the memory stick and clean the contacts. If you have a contact cleaner, spray it on the sockets.
