Solved Defag & Scan softwares !!!

hi, default windows scandisk & defrag takes a lotta time to perform respective task ... bt whereas 3rd party softwares do the same job in few mins ... why is it so ??? Thanx

Hello Bluezz just what scans do you refer to?? if you mean the Windows features the sfc and chkdsk shouldn't take that long at all.

As for the defrag well there are plenty of second party softwares about but as I use nearly all SSD's now I don't need them but I used to use MyDefrag a bit in the past on spinners. MyDefrag v4.3.1

AddRam I agree as Brink has often said the Windows feature is specifically made for Windows filing system - I only suggested that one because when I used it many years ago it was quick and the OP wanted something else for their own reasons.

The scans are more what I am interested in because if they are the ones I linked they shouldn't take that much time to complete eh?

A good defrag takes time, no way to make it faster. Any that run quick are not doing a good job.

Setup Windows Defrag to run on a schedule then forget about it.

Windows 7 built in defrag was designed by Diskeeper just for Windows 7. It defrag's as good as anything I have tried. Windows defrag put things the way Windows 7 wants them so Windows 7 finds them faster. The time it takes to defrag depends on how fragmented the drive is and how much data is being defragged along with the hardware capability. As it has already been stated. The first defrag will normally take a little longer.
Remember that a third party defragging program put thing where it want things and not necessary where Windows 7 wants things.

The built-in Win 7 defrag task only runs when the PC is idle.
It stops if the PC becomes not idle, and restarts later when the PC becomes idle again.
I use it, no problems here.

If someone turns on a PC, uses it, then turns the PC off, i wonder if defrag ever gets time to run completely.
There are other maintenance tasks that also need idle time.

I boot up a PC, use it as i want, and let it idle to sleep.
That gives Windows time to run any maintenance tasks needing idle time.

I see a lot more maintenance tasks run after applying Patch Tuesday updates, i let it idle for 1 hour.
I have Process Explorer open sorted by Start Time, so i can easily see what tasks start, run, stop, ... that's how i learned this

I don't know of any 3rd party utility to duplicate/replace Windows Chkdsk.
I use it when i restore a backup image, or if i see a problem that might be HD/SSD related.
If I see such an issue, i also use the HD/SSD Manufacturers diagnostics utility to more thoroughly test the device.

We don't know if the OP is using SSD's/HD's, and how many - no SF system specs with this info.

Exactly, do it 3 or 4 times in a row, each consecutive pass will be faster then the last, when you`ve got it down to a mere few seconds, set it to a schedule as Jack says or do it manually whenever the urge hits you.

My defrag schedule for my storage drives is once a month, because I`ll check them myself.
