Default File Type Associations - Restore

Restore Default Windows 7 File Extension Type Associations

   Information
The downloads below will allow you to restore the Windows 7 default registry entries and program associations of the selected file extension type.
   Note
This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

Since there are so many default file extension types in Windows 7, it may take a bit to have a complete list of them below. If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)
   Warning

Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.

If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg for the file extension below while logged into their administrator account.

These default file extensions should only be used in Windows 7.

:note: For Windows 10, please see here - Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Customization Tutorials

Here's How:
1. Click on a listed file extension below the blue NOTE box that you would like to restore the default associations of. This will be for the downloadable .reg file for the listed file extension.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Right click on the downloaded .reg file, and click on Merge.
NOTE: If you wish to see what changes will be made by the REG file, then you can right click on the extracted REG file and click on Edit to see the default registry entries that will be added. REG files are just text files. The "Edit" function just opens them in Notepad.
   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.
NOTE: If you are logged in a standard user account, then you will get a Cannot import type error. Just click on OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default association of the file extension though.

5. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .zip or .reg files on the desktop if you like.

6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply.

Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:
   Note
To download all available file extension fixes below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

The download not working has been solved.

Somehow the page shown after clicking the link in the first topic, (login / register)redirecting to the avi fix download was still cached. Even though i cleared the ie cache and cookies it remained cached. Instead of loging in as the popup requests, i pressed CTRL+F5, and the page whent garbage. (the contents of the downloaded zipfile where accepted as html data and shown as garbage onscreen) after closing the page, opening the link worked again. the restore has been done, Moovida took all extensions and broke some of the windows features. too bad they dont ask what type of associations you want.

Thanx for the help/fix files and idea's!

Hi, I am having major problems with my .ts TV recordings (MPEG2 and AVC/H.264) not having thumbnails showing up- if I change the extension to .m2ts or .tts the thumbnail works so I am guessing I just to need to look at one of your fix files, check the equivalent settings for .m2ts or .tts, and copy it over to .ts, or delete the whole .ts entry and copy the .m2ts or .tts entries on batch to notepad where I replace all the .m2ts or .tts entries for .ts- does this sound good? I did have a look at the .mov fix file and noticed there is no fix for a missing AssocMIME entry, yet I am missing a TS entry, would this also be something I need to fix?

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response:D. I ran the DEFAULT .ts fix, unfortunately it has not resolved the problem, there are still no thumbnails for .ts files. I notice in your fix file, a lot of the entries refer to .tts files, however I still have .ts entries for these with different values in some cases. I also made a draft fix file, previous to running your DEFAULT TS fix, where I just exported the then current tts entries, and changed tts for ts, including the MIME key which is not included in your file, some of the entries differ, or are in addition to the entries in your DEFAULT fix- any ideas of the best next course of action?:

Hi, thanks, my point was though in your DEFAULT_TS.reg many of the references are to .TTS files not .TS files, was that intentional? I still have my original TS entries as these were not replaced when running your DEFAULT.REG, presumably these are causing the thumbs not to appear, shall I just duplicate your TTS entries as TS and remove the current TS reg keys?

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
The TS file extension uses the same default WMP11.AssocFile.TTS entry as TTS. This would be why it has many them as well. I've updated the TS download, so try it again along with the TTS download to update your settings for both of them. :)

Thanks, I have run the updated TS and the TTS reg files, unfortunately the no ts thumbnail problem is still not fixed. I think this is down to there still being old regkeys for TS that are differing from the TTS regkeys, and maybe a missing TS entry in the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocMIME.xyz]?

The WMP11.AssocMIME.xyz CLSID sub entries are owned by "TrustedInstaller", and cannot be changed by anything unless you manually take ownership and "Allow" your user account "Full" control of them and then change it. These should be fine.

The default program for TS and TTS in Windows 7 is Windows Media Player. See if using either Open With or Default Programs to set them to open with Windows Media Player by default may be able to help.

No luck unfortunately : (, there did seem to be a junk entry in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ts\OpenWithList] that just said 'ba' which I deleted, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. It seems bizarre to me how the ts can have almost exact same keys as the tts, yet tts gives thumbnails and ts doesn't.

I know this is an old thread Brink, but have you thought about creating a "Restore All" that combines all the above in one zip file that extracts to a single .reg file?

If not that, how about a single .zip file that contains the individual .reg files. Then a single download would have all of them available for future use. There are currently 70 individual zip file downloads (well 69 and 1 reg file). I'm just thinking how nice it would be to have all of them in a single place on my hard drive for future use.

Hello Rich,

Wow, I didn't even realize that there was that many file extension downloads already.

I tried having a ZIP with all of the REG file downloads in one, but it exceeded the max upload size for ZIP files and was alot harder to keep updated than with the individual downloads. I'll look into again tonight to see what I may be able to do though.

A couple of ideas.

Firstly, you could have a series of zipped files arranged in alphabetical order covering A-D, E-J, K-O, P-T, and U-Z. In addition, you could also have some zipped files pertaining to the same program, e.g. paint and media player related extensions. It's still a good idea, though, to have them all separate as well.

Hello Donavan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What file extension is this for? For example all shortcuts, lnk (LNK) file extentions.

If you are not sure, then you can also do a system restore, at boot if needed, using a restore point dated before this happened.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Brink, I had forgotten about the file size restriction, rats. As for maintaining the zip file, a small batch file would do that for you. I like Dwarfs idea though. 5 zip files that will hopefully fall well under the max size restriction.

If you're busy I can take a whack at it. I can download all the zip + the zip .reg and put together a batch file to regen the 5 master zip files, then post the batch file here or send it to you via PM.

Sure that would be great. You can go ahead and post the bat files here when ready, and I'll integrate it into the tutorial as a separate option. :)
