Hello,
I have a windows 7 Home 64 bit dell laptop. I just moved apartments and ever since then I can not connect to the internet because every 5 seconds its stops working and when I use troubleshoot I get the "default gateway was broken." I've done some research and understand that is usually related to antivirus firewall systems, which I do not have other than Windows. Any help would be much appreciated and also I'm not very computer savy at all. Thanks!

Thanks Josh for replying!! I'm not on the network that is causing me problems, so should I upload my network configuration from when I am connected to my home network?

Sorry for the late reply, I have been slightly busy with my current training

Your IP settings look alright from what you have produced. Could you boot your machine into safe mode with networking and then test if your machine connects to the internet? This will help determine if there is a third party application causing a disconnection.

To do so follow this tutorial (Option One) - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.html

Please replace all references of Safe mode with Safe Mode with Networking

Post back your results

Many Thanks,
Josh! :)

So I booted my computer in Safe Mode with Networking and I was able to connect to the internet but after 3 minutes no internet pages would load and I switched my computer to normal mode.

Do you have any other devices on your network with the same issue? Do you receive an error message at all other than the Default Gateway is Broken? As in what happens when you can't connect to the internet?

This can help me in determining if this is a problem with your computer or your router

I'm the only device with any issues on this network and I'm the only one with a PC on the network. I've only recently been getting two messages that are "connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken" and "your computer appears to be correctly configured but the devices or resource (primary DNS server) is not responding)." When I can't connect to the internet, none of my pages load and the yellow triangle comes up until I troubleshoot and resolve the problem. The entire process repeats itself every 3 minutes at most.

Does the troubleshoot resolve the problem?

Are you connected via wireless or are you wired? If wireless then could you please plug your machine into your router through a wired connection to see if your wireless card is causing issues.

Can I ask that you follow this tutorial to change your DNS servers as a test - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15037-dns-addressing-how-change-windows-7-a.html

When you get to step 7 please replace the DNS servers referenced with the following:

Primary DNS Server - 8.8.8.8

Alternate DNS Server - 8.8.4.4

Once done please test your internet connection and post back your results

Josh! :)

I am using a wireless network. I'm currently looking for somebody with a wire to connect it to the router. I did however change my DNS server as directed. On the network causing me problems, the change of the DNS server did not affect my poor internet connection at all and still was able to use the internet for a few minutes before the "default gateway broken" troubleshoot came up. However I forgot to change it back when I was using my school's network and was not able to connect to the internet at all. Hope this makes result makes some sense.

Please post your results when you get a cable. Also if you can could you possibly temporarily connect another device to the router and test your internet on that device? Possibly a friend or relatives laptop?

This can greatly help me if you could

Just a guess; The fixed DNS servers are blocked by your school's firewall, for whatever reason, therefore not related to your other issue.

Found a cable and I'm currently plugged into the router on my laptop via LAC and the internet is working perfectly without any problems. Used my roommates laptop as well with the cable and worked perfectly with no problem as well.

This may be a hardware problem then in which case you may have to purchase a replacement wireless card for your laptop or a new router :(

Are you able to test wireless internet connectivity with your roommates laptop? This can help test if this is an issue with your router or your specific laptop

Also just a question, when connecting to the schools network do you connect using wired or wireless?

Many Thanks,
Josh :)

Hi Josh,

Sorry but I have been out of the country and haven't been using my laptop, which still doesn't connect to the internet. I connect to my schools internet with wireless. If it is a router/modem/wireless card problem, do have products you would suggest?

Have you tested another person machine via wireless on your router?

Also, what is the make/model of your router and laptop as you may need to update the software on them to see if that resolves the incompatibility.

Since you can connect to your schools network fine I do not think that this is a hardware issue
