Is it true that Win 7 while also being automatically scheduled to defrag by task scheduler also will periodically auto defrag on its own?

If this is true how do you disable the latter?

I used the Auslogics defraggers for 10 years with great results but have recently changed to Puran free defragger to get their boot-time defrag which is the only one which gets at System files that are otherwise running in Win7.

Haven't tried the boot time Puran yet. I'm going to give it a go.

I would just get it out of task scheduler period unless you set it to defrag on boot. Windows API provides no easy way to determine disk idle. I run all my defrags manually because anything automatic risks it kicking in when the drive is busy. Like you are not typing at the keyboard, and CPU is not very busy, but that's because you are leaving the computer alone while you are muxing a video. Drive is way busy and should not be defragged then!

Haven't tried the boot time Puran yet. I'm going to give it a go.

There's also an Intelligent Optimizer checkbox on the Additional Operations tab which will move the most-used files to the outer edge of HD for quicker reads. This can make a noticeable difference on older HD's.

I've now spread it to several dozen rigs where owners are running it monthly and haven't had a complaint yet. The System files defrag helped cut start up times in half on problem cases which were traced to slower HD's needed boot defragging.
