Hi.

The Recycle Bin properties (icon > right click) show allocated bin space for the different drives. But deleted files never go to bin and are permanently deleted. There is also no confirmation before deletion although option is checked.

Thanks for help.

The 'Don't move files to Recycle Bin' radio button is already unchecked.

But the files are still not going to the bin.

Can you please post a screenshot of the Recycle Bin Properties just like the one I had posted?

Please use Windows Snipping Tool and upload to Seven Forums servers.

Are you using Shift+Del to delete the files?

Hello Seymoria,

In addition, files deleted from removable drives do not go to the Recycle Bin and are permanently deleted.

If the files you delete are too large (ex: larger than set size of Recycle Bin) you will be prompted to delete permanently instead.

Also, double check to make sure that you do not have the Don't move files to the recycle bin... option selected for each drive listed in the Recycle Bin properties and not just for the C: drive.

Hope this helps for now, :)

^At one stroke you demolished my plans of taking the OP step by step into realising what all you have stated beautifully in the above post. :D

(Also I wanted to check on where exactly the files deleted from his internal drives go when deleted, if what he says is true.)

Thanks for the detailed reply.
1) No files go to the bin, either from removable or internal drives.
2) I get no confirmation check of permanent deletion for any file regardless of its size (e.g. 1kb txt).
3) I have option "Don't move files to the recycle bin" unchecked for all drives, internal and external. Please see attached screenshot.

Grateful for your help.

When you delete several things and then right click on recycle bin and select empty recycle bin, do you get a window up asking if you want to permanently delete these items? I had a similar problem long time ago.

OK,@seymoria, now a small experiment to find out whether at all the deleted files go to your Recycle Bin and if those do go whether those files remain hidden for some "unknown" reasons.

Download and install your OS bit version of WinRAR. (If you have 32 Bits Windows 7, install WinRAR 32bit version) WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files - one of the top 2 in the list

Create a new folder say Trial on your C drive. Copy about 10 small MP3 files or text files into that folder.(Your originals should remain wherever they are.Don't move but only copy.)

Now delete a few of those files from the Trial folder in C drive. Confirm the files are gone from the folder..

Now run WinRAR. Navigate to your C drive and then doubleclick on the $Recycle bin and then double click on the numbered recycle bin folder. Does it show your deleted mp3 files and text files? Post a screenshot.

The following screenshots should show you the steps.

Grateful for all your advice. Will do the steps.

However, before embarking on it, I just did some experiments on my own and found something interesting which might give clues to the problem.

1) Files and folders from the C: drive are all going to the Bin in a normal manner. However files from other drives (partitions) are not going there. Nor from the external drives. Although all have large bin space allocations.

2) The Bin shows nothing in it. But when I try to empty the Bin, I suddenly see a prompt showing a large number of files being deleted, more than a thousand. I stop it midway. Tried that 3 times.

3) I actually also went to 'Folder Options' and checked 'Show Hidden Files'. But still the files in the bin are not visible.

Thank you.

OK. Now it appears to be a problem induced by the Lacie external drive.( Huff... I should have caught it in the beginning itself. Blame it on my poor memory and retention capacity.:D )

Please remove all external drives including your Lacie external drive.

Post a screenshot of Windows Disk Management for us to know, how many physical internal drives and how many partitions in the drives you have.

After removing all external drives, create a TRIAL1, Trial 2 ...... folders in each partition in your system, copy files to those folders, delete and then confirm whether everything is fine.

And now read this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...es-not-display-files-deleted-ntfs-drives.html

^ Yes, the file reference points ( not the files themselves) did go to the recycle bin, but were invisible.

Had the OP carried out the WinRAR experiment I had suggested, he would have seen them all.

So the next step would have been to investigate why those were invisible?

Anyway now the OP admits, though those were unseen when empty the recycle bin is carried, he could see tons of those being deleted.

That immediately takes me to the causative factor - the lacie external drive through a precedent.

Please wait for the OP to confirm it. :)

Wow, well, removing my Lacie external drive seems to bring things back to normalcy. Now files from other partitions are also going to the Bin normally.

But why is that so? I mean what is the problem with my Lacie external drive? I generally always have this drive attached to my computer as it contains a lot of data on which I am mostly working.

Secondly, since it is my main data holder, I often want to recycle files I have deleted from it.

Many thanks.

I have a Lacie NAS, not the same as your external drive I guess. But I've always wondered why it comes with the software "Lacie Network Assistant". I can do anything I want with my NAS without running that program, so if you have such a program you could try and exit/close that program to see if it makes any difference.

The other Lacie thing is that Windows says it's NTFS formatted, when clearly it's not. If I try to copy a file with an ADS(Alternate Data Stream, only supported in NTFS) I get a warning that I will lose a property for the file, just like if a try to copy it to a FAT32 drive. I believe the format is XFS but I'm not sure.

Anyone knows more about this and can explain?

After a little bit of research and reading it appears the LaCie setup has something to do with the OP's problem.

Looking at the screenshot OP has provided in his post #8, there is a LaCie Setup partition F - which may be a FAT32 partition - and then a regular partition G.

May be deleting that LaCie FAT32 setup partition and annexing it to the main NTFS partition will resolve the problem.

On this premise and as a matter of abundant caution, I would advise the OP as follows.

1. Backup all data on the LaCie drive to another external drive.

2. Using Partition Wizard Home Edition 8.1.1, delete the Lacie Setup Partition (FAT32) and also other partitions in that drive..

3. Now partition and format the drive -NTFS- as you like.

4. Copy some files, delete and check it behaves like any other normal external drive and does not hide any deleted files in the recycle bin.

5.If everything works fine, that is it. Move all your data files back to that drive.

LaCie does say that it is not necessary to use the LaCie setup to format the drive - the first time, implied -and users are free to format it with Windows. My understanding is that during the first time if one goes ahead with the Setup Assistant, it may install it on Windows and also create a 520MB FAT 32 partition in the drive to work in conjunction with it for creating partitions and formatting later when one wants to change partitioning/format.

"You can also choose to quit the Setup Assistant and use Windows' Disk Management or Apple Disk Utility to format your drive. If you choose to quit the Setup Assistant, you will need to download the user manual and utilities from www.lacie.com/support. Please note that the Setup Assistant cannot be used after the drive is formatted."

Thank you for very detailed reply.

I have checked three other external drives I have, a Samsung, a Transcend, and a WD Passport. None have any such partition and none show any such problem with the Recycle Bin.

So, yes, the problem is definitely as you diagnosed.

I currently do not have enough back up space to attempt deleting this partition so probably will live with it at present.

Attached are some more screenshots showing the nature and contents of this (mysterious and annoying) Lacie Partition.

So I don't confuse anybody.
The recycle bin (the one on the desktop) and the $Recycle Bin are two different location.
Is that correct?
