Solved deleted files reappear straight after deletion on my flash or portable

Hi there.

I've noticed that when I delete files from my flash drive or portable external (even Shift+Delete). they are back on there after a refresh or even when I remove them and plug them back in. any idea why this happens? And Also lately when i plug a usb flash or portable hhd in it give me the message saying something like (H: has no associated program?? go to default programs and assign....something in those lines ....????

If you like as a test, download and merge the listed Drive, Folder, ini, and Directory items in the tutorial below. They will restore the default associations for theses to see if it may help.

Thanks Will Try That tonite when I'm Back At home. I thought of it and realized that after i installed the Shark007 codecs this started to happen, I previously used k-lite. I read that when explorer can't generate thumbnails of video files (avi etc.) it locks that file into place, and that is why it reappears back on the flash or portable. so I'm Thinking its the codecs, since K-lite generated thumbnails for all my video files, Shark007 after installed stopped doing that. so I am going to uninstall shark and go back to k-lite and see if that works. will keep you updated on my findings.

And another thing, my flash was formatted to the ntfs file system. But That was never a problem in the past, I formatted it back to fat32 last night and tried to delete the files, and as expected the "cancer" came back. so it's not the file system that causes it, like some forums claim.

It Seemed to work, I recommend that everyone download that "Defaults List" and keep it safe somewhere. It sorted out that problem I had with the " no application associated with drive" thing. And I do not know if it was also responsible for fixxing the "delete" issue, cuz I also changed my codecs back from Shark007 to k-lite. now thumbnails are being generated and all is good again.

You're most welcome. I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted. Those associations can mess up quite a bit of things if set wrong by mistake.

I don't know what changed the associations? the deleting problem is now solved, but last night the same thing happened again with a usb stick, the same message about no default program associated with (Directory of the usb stick)?

Odd. Did reapplying the Drive and Directory items help any?

Just to be safe, you might consider doing a full scan of your system with Malwarbytes Anti-Malware free version to help make sure your system is clean.

I have not yet tried to redo the drive and directory associations. Will do that tonite when back at home. and thanks for the link to that malware scanner, will do thart also tonite.
