A very useful and easy application is TFC by by Old Timer (save it to your desktop) TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums

Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.

Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

Won't disk cleanup do the same thing when Temp files is checked? Fabe

Disc Cleanup will do a simple delete, but CCleaner can be set to overwrite the same files with the '35 Pass' Gutman Algorithm for a secure deletion.

I securely delete files from the App Data> Local> Temp File with CCleaner so I have set exclusions for the GIMP x64 Image Management Program because it stores its font configuration cache there.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
Don't know how safe this is, but after my installation of Windows I always set the temp files path to a single folder. I called the folder Temp and delete it regularly.

Simple deletion is fine for a lot of files, but there are certain files that I prefer be overwritten with 7 passes of the Schneier Algorithem selected in Eraser which includes 5 passes of pseudorandom data.

Hello,

I guess CCleaner is also good CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

- Captain

Yes but, like any tool, has been known to cause problems.

Won't disk cleanup do the same thing when Temp files is checked? Fabe

Yes, for Temp files, downloaded programs, etc., depending on what is checked. Disk Cleanup is particularly useful after malware cleanup to remove the old System Restore points.

Take another look at what TFC clears for all users without the need to check boxes:

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs).

Hello,

I tested TFC.exe today it's a good Program i like the way it works it don't know if it was me or Program after running the Program it stuck at the log on screen and the Windows resolution changed after rebooting it was good. I though it will prompt to reboot or will give a message once it's done. So not quiet sure if it's a known behavior.

Is TFC capable of doing secure deletion?

Hi, Maxx.

No, TFC does not do the "35 pass" deletion routine you referenced earlier in the thread. Something you may be interested in is How to Clear the Windows Paging File at Shutdown. Because there are some third-party programs that temporarily store unencrypted (plain-text) passwords or other sensitive information in memory, you may want to run the Microsoft Fix it solution prior to shutting down the computer. (Note: it does, as should be expected, slow down the shut-down process.)

Corrine- Thanks for the tip about Microsoft Fix it 50463! As far as "35 pass" Gutman deletion is concerned from what I understand most of those passes do not even apply to the hard discs that we use today.
