I just tried using the command "cacls E:\ /t /g Chris:f" on the administrative command prompt and got the following response
K0Ft1.jpg

Additionally all the files on the external drives now have a small packlock covering them which wasn't present before.
Also upon attempting to delete an image file on the desktop I received the following message
CSgqP.jpg

Try these:
Code:
icacls /t /c E: /grant "Authenticated Users":(M)
icacls /t /c E: /grant Users:(RX)
icacls /t /c E: /grant Administrators:(F)
icacls /t /c E: /grant SYSTEM:(F)

See if that resolves the file issues and recycle issues. cacls is depricated (old) command form. icacls is better for Windows 7.

It seems to have resolved the recycle bin issues, although the permissions issues are still active.

EDIT: Recycle bin message is still present upon start-up if the external drive is plugged in.

Was the external drive plugged in when you ran the icacls commands?

Hi there,

I recently backed up all my data onto an external drive before factory resetting my laptop. However now when I try and access the files on the external I get a message saying the following:
whlico.jpg

Now I have been able to remove this message for the initial folder, however all subfolders and files then give me the same message.

I have tried right clicking the folder > properties > security and then adding my new user to the permissions list and clicking all the check boxes below but however this only works the the current folder and no subfolders.

Looking for a way to avoid having to do this 1000 times.

Thanks

You might try going into the Security Tab of the folder or drive you want to share. With the security tab open hit the "Add" button, then next window hit the "Edit" button then add "Everyone" to the access list, hit ok then apply then apply again on the security window. This should allow access to the drive for Everyone in the network.

Open an http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html. New commands (I added one more to hopefully resolve the issue):
Code:
takeown /f E: /r /d y
icacls /t /c E: /grant "Authenticated Users":(M)
icacls /t /c E: /grant Users:(RX)
icacls /t /c E: /grant Administrators:(F)
icacls /t /c E: /grant SYSTEM:(F)
See if that resolves the file issues and recycle issues.

Thanks so much, those last commands seem to have fixed the permissions issues. Now the folders can be accessed as the permissions dialogue boxes allow continue to be clicked without further prompting.

As for the recycle bin issues, I just selected yes to delete whatever was corrupt earlier.

Will report back tomorrow with further details seen as it's rather late just now.

EDIT: When trying to view photos it says I still don't have permission. It's showing the user as follows (which I'm assuming is the user prior to the factory reset)

Currently changing all subdirectories within the drive to give access to current administrator, probably won't really know the results till after then. Although that's a job for tomorrow considering how long it's taking.

Make sure to run each of the above commands. They do not seem to have applied last time.

Each must be run followed by an Enter. The above contains four commands and four Enters.

Tried the above commands one by one each followed by enter. However it doesn't seem to have worked, still getting errors to do with privileges when trying to open word documents etc.

Alright, let's go at this differently.
Code:
icacls /t /c E: /grant "Authenticated Users":(OI)(CI)(IO)(M) > %userprofile%\Documents\AU.txt
icacls /t /c E: /grant Users:(RX)(OI)(CI)(IO)(GR,GE) > %userprofile%\Documents\U.txt
icacls /t /c E: /grant Administrators:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) > %userprofile%\Documents\A.txt
icacls /t /c E: /grant SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) > %userprofile%\Documents\S.txt

Post the .txt files in your next post.

Ah, now I know what we are doing wrong... Grrr... I feel stupid. Should have run the commands myself to be sure.

Code:

icacls E: /t /c /grant Administrators:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F)

My apologies. In the forum I help out in, we lost about 40% of our help in one night, so I have been stretched a bit thin of late. Guess you suffered for it, and I am very sorry for that.

Hey don't worry about that, you're taking your time to help me out I really appreciate that there's no rush.

Tried running the commands seperately and got the following
xc9Uv.jpg

(Top left to bottom right is order for 1-4)

Also tried enetering the 4 at once and resulted in the same as the top left command prompt response.

Probably trying to do too many changes to permissions at once. Try the above instead.

I am not on my Windows system, so I cannot check at this time whether the (OI)(CI)(IO) commands can be set the way I wrote them previously.

EDIT: You may need to run these and go get a cup of coffee/get lunch/get dinner or do it before bed. It will take some time to apply permissions to all files.
