desktop icons gone after update

i aqm not sure if this is the right place to post this issue, if i am wrong i apologise, after 28 updates today my desktop icons have no picture per se ie they are all like programme files but task bar unaffected help would be appreciated

thanks for your help unfortunately neither options one or two did not work so did not try three, also how can i get it to open full size all the time please?

You might want to download and run a full scan with malwarebytes to make sure you haven't got any nasty stuff going on there.

Does your account have administrator written under it like this below?

You could also create a new administrator account

Try creating a new user account like I mentioned above, to see if you can run the sfc /scannow.

Just switch theme to "Windows Classic" and next back to Aero

being a bit of a thicko i have difficulty following the suggestions of the experts, so i shall get some books to try and acquaint myself better with this system but thanks to all who tried

Just wanted to add my 2 cents here. I had a similar problem with my icons after a windows update. I found out that one of the updates was causing the problem...don't know why. I went through my recent updates and deleted them one by one until I found the one that was causing the problem (if the update wasn't causing the problem, I reinstalled it before deleting the next update just to make sure it wasn't multiple updates causing the problem). This didn't make me real happy but it did solve my problem with icons. I then had to be sure to turn off automatic updates and make sure that any future updates didn't include the one that caused my icons to disappear!

I'm not sure how long I had to do this but eventually the 'bad' update quit showing up in the downloads.

Like I said, just my 2 cents worth. (Course, we all know that 2 cents isn't worth much these days, right?)

i did solve it as i dumped the supposedly better WIN7 and now got my reliable XP but thanks to all who tried
