Solved Desktop Icons Mysteriously Modified

The icons on my desktop suddenly were modifed with a tiny little rectangle that looks like a miniature desktop with little red, green and blue characters added to them.
The recycle bin and my computer icons don't have this modification. Any ideas how to remove this would be appreciated

If that doesn't help, posting a screenshot of these icons might be helpful, as I can't quite mentally picture what you have described.

I believe that with program icons, if you right click and then properties and then change icon, you will be able to regain to original icons. It worked with me when I lost some program icons due to Temporary File Cleaner.

Did you try rebuilding your Icon Cache, like I suggested? Did that not solve the problem?

This is your shortcut arrow overlay that is messed up on the icon. You can use the free program in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below to restore the shortcut arrow back, or just remove it.

Hello rickz, if none of above methods works, you should try to install StarDock IconPackager (trial) and apply any icon set. After that, just change back to Windows default icons and everything will be fine.

Unfortunately, Teekz, icon cache didn't help. I'll try the other suggestions.
